Good point on when it should end mind. The MH17 thing lasted for months, made me feel quite uncomfortable. Anyway, fortunately I'll be watching this one in Ibiza. 🍸 who's gonna request it? And no news outlet should be publishing multiple articles about it. Slot was good about it. Played it down and said it was possibly one fan who didn’t realise then others shutting him up. I was out and haven’t actually seen it or the game so I don’t know how plausible that is. But at least he was trying to diffuse things. Renton 27805
Look, personally I can't stand all these sentimental one minute silences that pop up about virtually anything, football related or not. I'd get rid of 90% of them. Tun hat here, but we're actually no different to Liverpool imo. Examples being the MH17 murders which seriously went on for many, many months. And literally a whole stand was filled with flowers after Robson's passing, money which could and should have been much better spent on his charities. That said, it costs nowt just to respect it whether or not you agree with it. Booing a silence for Jota, if that is planned, will rightfully put is in a bad light. Hopefully it won't happen.
Gemmill 63312
I would assume there'll be a minute's silence for this first weekend of fixtures, and that's it. It was a tragic accident, which you pay tribute to and then you move on. No one should be doing further minute's silence once the opening weekend is out the way.

And that minute's silence should really be limited to Anfield. These guys are footballers. Do they deserve greater acknowledgement in death than ordinary people? Not for my money. A tribute at Anfield makes sense, but the thought that the rest of the footballing world should even care about this is honestly bizarre to me.

I'd say do it across all grounds for the opening weekend cos he was a PL player so it's right that the league honour him with that. He'll have had mates in other teams too. But that should be the finish. Edited August 11 by Gemmill

I think it may have been a response to.the booing of the national anthem beforehand.. I'd never sing it but I wouldn't stand and boo something that means a lot to millions of my fellow citizens including some of my closest friends who have served in the military and not expect a reaction and/or criticism. They want it both ways or all their own way. And when they don't get it as we've seen all summer they become the most petulant entitled wankers on the face of the fuckin earth....
Craig 12389
It should be done this weekend, and that's it. The only acceptable caveat would have been in Liverpool weren't playing their opening match at Anfield, but they are. 25th August is our first home match - it's about us and getting behind our club ahead of a crucial season. It won't need an arranged minute's silence. That's not our of disrespect to either Jota or Liverpool, it's just we all need to move on from it.

The box I was in at Wembley in March was towards the Liverpool end and I was quite taken aback by how hostile their reception was to the national anthem. I've been to matches involving Liverpool many times, but this was the first that involved the anthem being played. Whether you're in favour of the national anthem or what it represents is immaterial, it shouldn't be booed. If it is then you're giving carte blanche to similar reactions coming your way to something that is meaningful to you. My issue with Liverpool fans is they'll take massive offence to the latter but not give a flying fuck about the former - it's massive double standards. If you're in favour of the anthem, sing the words. If you're not, stay silent but in all scenarios, remain respectful.
Tom 15535
How many Liverpool fans are actually from Liverpool or even England at this stage? It’s nothing more than cosplay/simulacra at this point. Tbh I can understand the Irish lads booing it Either way its attention seeking shite & its better just to stay quiet.

Tbf, I didn't see the match or it's run in. Why do they boo the national anthem? I mean on the one hand I'm as much FTK as the best republican, but it is our national anthem so I'm not booing it. Is it just the Irish connections with the scouse? Cos in my experience again there's more Irish that support that other red cunt team, Man United.

They've got fair grievances tbh and it is literally the most "Celtic" city in England; the population being significantly made up of as you say Irish and also North Welsh immigrants (that's where the one off accent comes from) https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-16361170

Yeah it's a bit like Celtic but not because of the Irish thing - they see themselves as a left wing/socialist and revolutionary city. The presence of so many foreign glory hunters negates that largely imo.

Renton 27805
A very strong regional identity is probably part of it. Tbh again, I see similarities with us. I don't feel remotely English although appreciate many novocastrians do. Some of the tropes about Liverpool are based in some truth. Think they're funny (usually aren't), thievery, victimhood. But I personally always get on well with scousers and really like the city. LFC and EFC can get fucked though.
