The ref see's it real time from one angle, it was a free kick, he blew his whistle, end of.

You don't hesitate to blow the whistle when you see a foul.

And it remains the wrong decision because the keeper wasn't in control of the ball. Got it yet?

It was not a howler as you insist, it was a perfectly acceptable decision.

:lol: earlier it was a foul. Now it is wrong, but acceptably so.

You're having an absolute nightmare.

It was a free kick and a perfectly acceptable decision for me, I haven't changed my mind.

The argument Villa seem to be making isn't that the referee necessarily should have called it the other way, but that he should have let the goal go in so that VAR could be used to support the decision. So I think that's like saying "whether it was the right decision or not, the referee should have delayed blowing to be able to ascertain the outcome properly".

If that is part of standard referee training then maybe they've got a point? If it's not then they can fuck off.

And they were saying that because, if he hadn't have blown the whistle, VAR would have ruled that the goal should stand because the keeper didn't have control of the ball. Despite what Toonpack and KCG inexplicably think.

Yes fair enough but I think it's a slightly different argument to 'he's made a mistake'. It's more like 'he's not followed due process on how this situation should have been handled, which has in turn meant that the mistake could not be overturned." So yes it's about the mistake but if the referee has indeed bungled the process then I actually do think that's a less forgivable situation than just him calling it wrong, which would feel more like just one of those things that happens.

That said though, I don't think that the process actually does exist... which means that like it or not, the ref did the best he could with the information he had, and it's no one's fault even if it was the wrong call. They can suggest that a 'more experienced ref' would have delayed it if they want, but the reality is the guy made the best call he could and followed process correctly.

We'll find out soon enough cos the PGMOL will respond publicly to Villa's public complaint. So if the idea that he should have delayed the whistle is not standard process, they'll surely spell that out.

That's what needs clarifying TBH.  If there is a process then it's a mistake.  If not, then maybe it needs tweaking so the play is allowed to carry on.

This is like the decisions like sending offs where it looks just a bit iffy in real time but var spots an ankle stamp or vice versa where var proves no contact.

From where the ref was it looks 100% like he's kicked it out of his hands only for var to show there was doubt. The question is whether he should have blown but this leads us down a path where the ref leaves everything to var and never makes a call at all.

Turns out the Villa player stamped on the GKs hand anyway, so it's immaterial whether he had control of the ball. Correct decision!

This is old news but this is the best angle showing it.

Plus the ball is between the goal Keepers hands which is the very first definition for which they are considered to be in control of it, and during which they cannot be challenged by an opponent.

========= The Rules =========

 A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball with the hand(s) when:

the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body) or by touching it with any part of the hands or arms except if the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper or the goalkeeper has made a save

holding the ball in the outstretched open hand

bouncing it on the ground or throwing it in the air

A goalkeeper cannot be challenged by an opponent when in control of the ball with the hand(s).

========= The End =========

Sounds like he can just hover one hand above the ball when it's on the ground too.

I genuinely cannot believe that you are stupid enough to read:

"A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball with his hands when the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface"

And think that that just means ANYWHERE between his hands or the hand and the surface. :lol:

The strawman is strong in this one.
