This says a lot about our attacking options off the bench. Still, nothing another CB won’t sort.

Someone needs to introduce them to the Toonpack "it's simple really, my eyes don't lie" analysis framework.

I own exclusive rights to the "my own eyes framework" so they can fuck off.

We're back baby

We're creating plenty of chances, we're just not putting them away. Hopefully getting the new signings integrated will fix that. But we're not really the big story for me. That's Liverpool, Chelsea, Sunderland, Spurs and Forest. They're scoring significantly more than you'd expect from what they're creating.

We're maybe over performing a bit in defence, that could be due to good performances from a good 'keeper or it could be profligacy from the opponent.

But again, I don't think we're the big story here. Look again at Spurs, Sunderland, and Liverpool. Also... Brentford are perhaps paying the price for their 'keeper's shortcomings?

We are safely in the good box, creating a good number of chances, and not allowing many the other way. The Top Left box is where you don't want to be.

They're benefiting hugely from good keeping from Roef's or profligate shooting from their opponents.

Aston Villa are an interesting one as well, they're not doing great, but by these measures they should actually be doing even worse...

After 9 games:

we're creating an all right amount, not great, not bad, but our finishing has been poor. I think as our attacking line begins to get a better understanding (and when Wissa hopefully hits the ground running) we should see movement up towards the top right.

Thankfully, our defending has been very good, it;s a little frustrating that we've conceded more goals than you'd expect, but this could be a combination of good finishes, and small sample size.

These two combine to actually put us in the bottom right square, aka the good one. That's where you're creating a good number of chances, but conceding few.

I was curious as to whether this season was as tight as I thought, so I had a quick fiddle around. After that side quest I started to look at the numbers.

After game week 5 this was the spread last season and this;

Liverpool took a big lead this season but actually the rest of the league is quite congested compared to 24/25

After 9 games you can see it's significantly more congested.

Only 6pts currently separate 2nd and 13th, in 24/25 it was 11.

Schar is now the fourth-highest scoring defender in the club's history.

Possibly not that incredible an accolade but well done anyway  Who are the top 3? I was thinking Neil McDonald took the pens for a while before he went to Everton. Struggling after that like

McDonald also had a lot of shots from free kicks iirc. The one where they used to pass it along the front of the box so they could avoid the wall.

When you consider Wharton & McDonald played alongside each other for 3 years, that's some return from our defence.

As Alex points out McDonald was the penalty taker for a couple of years so that explains some of them. He's another one we missed (alongside Goddard) following the summer of 1988 and we never adequately replaced. IIRC he got the hump because McFaul kept playing him as a right winger when he preferred right back.

There's a great photo of Hudspeth holding the cup next to a policeman at Wembley and he looks about 50, I'm pretty sure he had a long career here?

Jimmy Scoular looked fucking ancient
