He's welcome here any day. We'll get chonged and stick Ice Cube's War of the Worlds on. I reckon it'd be bang up his street.

Last night at the FT whistle you saw the togetherness between Ramsdale and Pope.  Ramsdale was made up with Pope's performance.  I can see us signing him long term as Popes eventual replacement.  He looks happy here and part of the team despite not playing.

Aye, he doesn't command his box as well as Pope, and Pope is probably better in 1-1s and stopping shots, but on balance I still think being calm under pressure and being able to pass a ball outweighs the rest.

So if he drops a couple in the net on Tuesday it's ok because he can kick the ball into orbit/to a winger?

It's likely that neither are good enough. Ramsdale is only on loan which leaves the door still open for Trafford at some point...

Strikes me at the moment the key positions where quality is in short supply (in the league generally) are elite goal keepers and strikers. Also the positions that arguably make the most impact on a match. Hope Ramsdale does well and keeps his place.

I like Pope as a person I think, but he's the spit of a mate of mine who can barely tie his own shoe laces.

I think that, irrespective of who is the better keeper, Pope needed dropping for his own good after the recent run of form. And we do actually have a good backup keeper which allows for that.

We saw it last season when Pope was injured and Dubs played, Dubs may not have made some saves that Pope probably would have, but his distribution was so much better he arguably had less saves to make because we weren't turning the ball over so deep because of his better feet and Ramsdale's kicking/feet skills are on a whole different level to Dubs.

This is really mosly due to Pope being a few inches taller and a bigger frame.

Nah, it’s always about decision making.

Yes, and you can make different decisions if you're taller and bigger than all of the opposing players.

Think Pope is 2/3” bigger than Ramsdale, so it’s not making much difference once you take into account arms and jumping.

2/3" is 0.7cm or do you mean 2-3" (5-7.5cm). There's apparently 10cm difference in their heights; 1.88 versus 1.98m. But the key differentiator is that Nick Pope is taller than pretty much all outfield players in the league (apart from being the same height as one in our team and slightly shorter than another in our team!). Whereas just about all teams have a couple of players as tall or taller than Ramsdale.

There's more difference when you take into to account arms as the taller you are generally the longer your arms (Pickford aside). Height is generally a big advantage for keepers as long as they're still relatively agile and can get down. My point is that Pope has an advantage in regards to commanding the box and Ramsdale will never be able to overcome that. That said I don't think Pope is particularly great at commanding the box given his size, he should be catching more than he does.

he's been punching way too many catchable balls lately. his confidence looks shot and it was the right time to give ramsdale a chance, whether pope's injury is real or not.

the only way to see whether we would miss pope's shot-stopping and command of his box is to give ramsdale a chance. i like what i've seen from him in his limited minutes so far. we know what pope's strengths and weaknesses are already.

long-term i don't know if either of them is the solution. got a feeling we might return for trafford in the summer.

I was listening to something yesterday talking about their relative shotstopping. I think they were looking at something like goals conceded vs post shot xG, and basically out of the 44 keepers that have played a certain number of games in the PL, over the last X number of games, (can't remember the exact number), Pope was 9th and Ramsdale was 40th.

So he would appear to be objectively better at shot stopping, of the two of them.

I still think he needed a break though.

Pope is the better keeper (bar feet). He is just having  a bad patch. Thats mainly due to the decisions he is making so its not an ability thing. He also positions himself quite well so making difficult saves look routine.

Id personally like us to go for a big upgrade in the Summer. Kobel would be my pick but I suspect we'll go back in for Trafford.

Agree totally, I don't think either are our mid-long term solution. Pope has been great for us in patches but he's too volatile and has directly cost us on multiple occassions. Ramsdale historically is also prone to mistakes and isn't big enough in an Eddie Howe team. Trafford is still a good shout, he's more or less the same height as Pope and is better with the ball at his feet. Man City having signed Donnarumma on a 5 year deal puts pay to him making a claim for top spot there so for every good reason he'll be wanting to go somewhere where he will genuinely be backed to be first choice. For that he won't get a higher profile option than us. Do wonder what sort of wages he'd be on at City and how much they'd be looking at for the transfer.

You're touching on the key point for me. The next keeper needs to be a massive upgrade. Trafford for me is a bit of a side-step. He has potential, but there's no guarantee it'll be realised.

Maybe someone like Unai Simon.

Pope indisputably makes some brilliant saves through his positioning, reach and anticipation.

Even if Trafford is a side-step, he's a 10 years younger than Pope side-step, so that's not bad.
