Thing is with TAA, he could be very good in that position, because of his attributes, but he hadn’t played there anything like enough. He could probably do with a season playing there in the PL first. It’s so different playing a lot of the game with your back to goal compared to RB, where all the okay is usually in front of you. Not just that but there’s less time and space in the middle of the park. What’s weird is Southgate is normally so cautious, and it seems like an unnecessary gamble. Especially as Mainoo would be tailor made for that role alongside Rice. No t tye end of the world by any means. 3 points on the board is obviously the main thing. All the attacking players he could have brought on to try to regain control of the game after Serbia had a go in the second half and he brings on Gallagher and Mainoo, effectively leaving us with three defensive midfielders on the pitch for the final 5-10 mins. We have the quality to take control of games and dispatch the weaker sides but for all the talk of being brave, it was a typically negative mindset from the manager. Trent clearly isn’t a CM btw. I thought that, especially in relation to the service he had and the role he had to play for the team, he did a great job second half. For his one chance he did pretty much everything right and was thwarted by a top class save. Some of his hold-up play where no team mate was within about 40 yards of him and he had to win a foul holding off about 3 defenders was brilliant. He was the least of the team’s attacking issues after the break

It’s an easy group and the quality of our players will take us to the later stages at which point the deficiency of our management/tactics will let us down. Then we’ll all get over it quickly because we don’t really give a fuck about international football. So long as none of our players get injured, I’ll consider it a successful tournament.
