I haven’t got a clue. I was speculating as to what the PM was getting at. Ironically I see closer EU ties by stealth (which I think is what Starmer is going to do) is another ‘cake and eat it’ scenario which would be more popular if it was honest and out in the open. Trying to appeal to (or not annoy) people who still think Brexit is a good thing is bat shit crazy. It’ll be another fudge that pleases almost no one

By ‘them’, I mean the previous government. Also, legitimate academic institutions were incentivised to attract increasing numbers of foreign students. As fees for UK students were frozen for ages (effectively reducing in real terms) whereas they could charge foreign students what they liked. There’s other stuff too. You could have prevented a lot of channel crossings in small boats by agreeing to have had a processing centre on the French side (I think the French offered this option).

I think the student visa thing was to allow them to paper over the cracks of the loss of FoM. But it was massively open to abuse with academic institutions being set up that were only pretending to teach students and were just a route into allowing you to live here

I’ll leave that to you, you’re more well-versed in it

Out of form a little bit? Fatigued due to a lack of cover so having to play most of every game? A combination of those things?

It’s a lottery with the weather there tbh, mate. Obviously the mean temps are going to be warmer but it’s a mountainous region of the UK. But probably not a bad shout at that time of year. Worth noting though that the Scots (iirc) have all of July (rather than August) off for their kids summer hols so they’re back at school early / mid August. Although you obviously get lots of English visitors. Beginning of September might not be a bad shout either. You will get A LOT of daylight in June too.

I think you’re forgetting that it’s only the lesser clubs that need to maintain the integrity of the competition

Is that Louise Taylor’s inelegant tautology? -
If he’s referring to the farm in Northumberland then surely, given the location, there’s a fair chance the owners are heroic MLFs anyway
-
Possible anyway. I do take your point. Picking him and Corbyn doesn’t say a lot about the party in terms of being able to govern and take enough people along with you. With Corbyn it was the naivety from a media and foreign affairs pov. With Starmer it’s the complete lack of personality and any sense of standing for, well, anything

And when you do that you appeal to nobody. I actually think there’s a decent chance he’s gone before the next general election at this rate
-
Ah, mate. Gutted for you. Really sorry to hear about that.

Generic small time football blather thread FOREVER

I had nightmares about him. He was an older fella and he died as a result of his burns. In the bitterest of ironies the stand was to be pulled down after that match and replaced with a modern steel structure. To make matters worse, Bradford had already won the league (old third division was it?) so the ground and that stand was packed. Peter Jackson who subsequently played for us was the Bradford City captain. It was absolutely disgusting what happened because they knew what a fire risk it was and about the build up of rubbish underneath the seats. The roof was tar which was not only highly flammable but led to the toxic fumes which killed a lot of the victims. The bloke you’re on about was, I think, covered in burning tar which had fallen from the roof. The whole stand was alight in virtually no time. I’d probably struggle to watch a whole documentary on it tbh. -
Absolute doddle I’d say

Can’t appeal two yellows iirc

Had a fancy Leicester might get a result. Just with it being a derby and all the pressure being on Forest
-
Not counting my chickens but in many a season gone we’d have been on the opposite end of a result like that. Where we showed plenty of fight when things went against us. Losing to a top side whose class ultimately showed or whatever. Because the ‘top teams’ are ‘more clinical’ and ‘find a way to win even when they don’t play well’. And it feels fucking great to be on the other side of that. And particularly against those odious cunts and their fans
