I think this gamble in January thing is a false premise, they'll know the players they want and if they aren't available, they won't take second best if they think they can get their first choice next window (or two). The aim isn't/wasn't to win the 2023 League Cup, it's to become a behemoth, that is the plan and they won't gamble (which has the risk of it not paying off) to get there.
