    Think we might have been better getting ourselves out earlier last night and having a go at them then. The ball seemed to be swinging then and we might have got a couple of early wickets and put them under pressure. Only 86 ahead now and they look comfortable as anything.

    Been there three times and loved it each time. Hake, Monkfish and Halibut all served with an ice cold beer. Really looking forward to trying the one on the quayside as the lass serving is apparently stunning.

    It's quite painful this like. We look like we're getting absolutely nowhere against these two. May as well give Root a couple of overs to see if he can get one of them to do something stupid.

    He's pissing about in the Caribean for weeks. I doubt he's ready to play even if he wanted to.

    I suppose Hales in particular being an opener. As a number 4 Vince has to play a few more shots but he also needs to be able to score ugly. It seems to me that we would be better off with Ballance at 4 and Vince and 5. Of course when they both end up coming it at about the same time it makes no difference but I think if Ballance is in with one of Cook or Root he might hang around longer and allow Vince to come in with us in a better position.

    Rafa said last night that the two of them decided between themselves.

    I think SEW has got it pretty much right there. Anita maybe for Aarons and I think Hayden will start somewhere but I don't think Diame will start. Don't know if he's played any pre season games for Hull but even if he has I can't see Rafa throwing him straight in on a days notice.

    We could have done with Stokes right about now. Looking a bit of a struggle. More positively Durham are close to bowling Somerset out before lunch.

    Rafa seemed to be very firm that Perez isn't going anywhere last night.

    Agree re left back. While I agree with Mbemba and Lacelles being first choice, I do think Hanley will play a fair bit. I think Rafa will mix it up a bit because of the amount of games.

    I think Hanley is a pretty good signing. Whenever I've seen him play he's looked like exactly what we need. Clark I'm less enthused about but hope Rafa can get him to improve and appreciate he can cover (which is all I think he is) a few positions. I probably would have been more excited about signing a promising young kid from league one but in reality Clark offers more experience and reliability.

    It's a cunt having a test start on a Wednesday. Seems ages since we've had one go near the full five days and a lot of the time they're over in not much more than three days. It's going to spoil my weekend viewing if it ends as soon as it looks like it's going to. I'll have to watch some football at this rate.

    I wasn't in favour of him coming here particularly because of his age and lack of any premier league experience. But, he's about as close as you will get to a guarantee of goals in this league. It's a lot of money but you would expect him and Gestede to do well for them this season.

    There's pics floating around of him at St James so I expect the formal announcment to be made shortly.

    I think the whole "in Rafa we trust" thing is getting a bit out of hand. There's absolutely no reason why we can't question the signing of players that we don't think are up to the task. But if Rafa knew about Hayden (and from what Hayden's said he did) you would have to assume he knows about Clark too and sees more in him than we do. Of course he's made mistakes in the past and I'm sure he will again.

    If only we'd signed him on loan eh? Not thrilled by this signing as he's never looked impressive and struggled to get a game for them last season when they were incredibly bad. But we needed another centre back for cover and he can also cover a couple of other positions we're not massively well stocked in. I'll give him a chance the same as anyone and hope that Rafa can improve him into a premier league player. Not sure we're better off with him than Williamson though.

    I think with Shelvey and Diame in the centre we should have enough with attacking ability further forward in Ritchie, Perez, Aarons and possibly SDJ. I would definitely like to see another winger though. I like Aarons but he's not exactly been reliable so far. But we do have Perez, Gayle and even (at a push) Goufrran who can do a job as a wide attacker for us. And apparently we could even make use of Janmaat (if he stays) and Anita in wide positions at a push.
