It was terrible for me for two reasons, firstly I honestly thought that Man U would become our rivals (as they did all too briefly) and selling them our best player made no sense, and secondly I thought we'd instantly gone back to be being the selling club we'd always been. I still think it was wrong to effectively write off that season in January but can't argue with the result the nest season - though a Ferdinand/Cole/Beardsley combo could have been even better.

More of a hero to me than Shearer by a million miles. I loved the unashamed joy he got from scoring and he summed up our "arrival" on the big stage. I know he marked his card for a lot of people but I judge people by what they do in the shirt and he'll always be a legend to me.
  3. My concern is the thought of a 14 year old who would be "freaked out" - how introverted could she be? Probably a case of "stupid" racism rather than "malicious" racism - I'd tend to have mercy.
  4. There seems to be an irrational need on some peoples part to believe Enrique is good (a lot on N-O seem to have it). I defended him last year on the basis of a bit of potential, his age and the adjustment factor. However this year he has been terrible and I won't defend so called premiership footballers who fail so many times to pass to a team mate. This did apply to others on Sunday (uncharacteristically Jonas) but Enrique is a constant culprit. The only problem is that while I think Bassong may be a better defender, his forward play is wank. If we get the chance to rebuild the squad either in Jan or the summer I'd be looking for new left backs.
  5. Olbermann a week late.... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/vp/27652443#27652443 ...but well put. Indeed. There was a huge campaign by Mormons - the religion of forced child brides and no black members before 78 - maybe they could argue they were forced to give up polygamy but that was just another tenet of their con-man founder - the root reason is the usual Christian bigotry.
  6. The irony of "hun" is staggering - I know she was English but her family by marriage is rather Germanic. I also always found "the nations favourite grandmother" thing a henious insult to everyones proper nanas.
  7. Gonzalez is out for 4 months according to he chron - was carrying the injury when signed - what a system eh?
  8. Christianity came to prominence as a uniting force for the Roman Empire so no different to Islam really.
  9. Undoubtedly but WWI was caused by empires squaring up to each other - I see both nationalism and religion (though more in the past) as part of the whole tribal tendency of humanity and both equally as "wrong". I know you could argue its natural but my hope is that by this stage in our develonment the need to be defined so strongly in one "gang" or another would be lessened. One notion about Islam I admire at a basic level is the notion of a brotherhood which transcends borders - unfortunately based on one religion rather than a "simple" notion of humanity.
  10. I think the word you're looking for is cunt I thought that was the American translation - much like their fanny/arse confusion.
  11. Allen - that Anschutz funds the Discovery Institute which marks him down as a fuckwit for me. That Hunt looks too much like the "all American guy" and the last one sounds too much like a "dude".
  12. Yeah but simple explanations like that ignore the use of the religion on the ground to teach people from a very young age who and what to believe. It's a lot easier to start young kids off with you're a catholic/they're prods rather than teach the politics of forced migrations and rotten british landlords (which comes later). NI is/was still seen by Nationalists as part of a catholic Ireland and they yearn for the catholics in the north to be under catholic/Irish rule - I think its that view rather than the land per se that is what matters. Similarly the loyalists have always made a big thing about the freedom to practice their religion which they would view as threatened by a United Ireland. My view now is that with borders meaning less and less in a modern Europe, its the clinging on to the religion that drags it on. The first (painful) step for me would be to abolish sectarian schools.
  13. Israel/Palestine India/Pakistan Yugoslavia Sri Lanka NI All could be described as ethnic/nationalist as well but elements of religion poison and underpin them.
  14. Stalin is a better example for the "all atheists are immoral, genocidal bastards" argument though.

It's actually an Irish lullaby, go and read the lyrics for you don't know what you're talking about. no it's not it's a folk song about the famine and a man who stole food to feed his family. a lullaby about famine, wtf do you sing to your kids... Maybe he frightens them with a prison ship to Botany Bay as well.

It's actually an Irish lullaby, go and read the lyrics for you don't know what you're talking about. So when the bloke gets transported for stealing food during the famine who do you think did the transporting? A hell of a lot of Irish folk songs are love songs with an added twist of Anti-Brit.
  17. Went for a root canal this morning - I took a day off because I've had four of these previously and two were awful experiences (one is why I hate Everton due to association with having it the day before the cup quarter final). Anyway the dentist got stuck in to it and then said: "Ah, the nerve's completely dead and has been for some time so this will be completely painless" Heaven - after yesterday I was expecting the worst.

Anyone else see the irony in the lad's stance when his user name is from an Irish rebel song?

I think you should include Jonas. Didn't have a great match but he's the best player at the club imo. Probably - post match anger effect - he did piss me off today by playing far too many passes that an eight year old could have cut-out though. Enrique was worse like. Could barely pass to a team mate all match. Probably top of my death wish list today - though Martins was pushing him all the way.

Apart from Given, Beye, Collocini and Barton I wouldn't life an eyebrow to selling any and all of the rest (though I'd keep what passes for a fit Viduka). I'd head for the local leagues and sign players who pass to team mates.
  22. Did the prologue for 'O' level - anyone who claims its literature should be fucking shot - emperor's new clothes syndrome at its best.
  23. Just got in - what a shit result and mainly a shit performance. 1-1 should only have been one winner - second stupid goal given away put paid to that. I don't think I'm going to bother with Chelsea now - I'm not paying £48 to watch a hammering meted out to people getting paid thousands a week who can't control and pass a ball ten yards to a team mate or hit a shot anywhere near the target from anything like 18 yards - we have several in our team and it's absolutely fucking disgraceful - I would honestly refuse to pay the cunts if I was in charge.
  24. People trot out the "prove himself elsewhere" line whenever Shearer is mentioned and it makes sense but can anyone really see him as manager of Hartlepool or somewhere? I'm not averse to the prospect - I think he has character and is driven to win - much like Keane. New owners will want to enthuse the fans - It might make more football sense to get Deschamps or whoever in but from a sort of business sense (ie pleasing the customers) it would work. The alternative would be Keegan but I honestly think theres too much baggage associated with bringing him back now.
  25. Never been tempted to read "classic" literature - I was probably put off by doing Dickens for 'O' level. I think the oldest book I've read is Catch 22 and possibly some old Sci-fi short stories by people like Dick and Lovecraft. I'm also going to sound like a philistine here but I find black & white films very hard to watch and/or rate - I think the Godfather is probably the oldest film I rate.
