I thought he said "back and right", i.e. fit.

Oliver Stone's JFK?

ahem.

I've been at the Guiness, ok?

Alex, I love you; but you get so agressive when you've been drinking. I hate explaining all these bruises to the neighbours.

But who was the first south american to play in the top flight in Ingerland? And fr the bonus point for whom?

All answers on a postcard to Vic, care of somewhere.

The Robledo brothers (or one of them)? Played for Huddersfield of someone like that first though I think.

Brazil boy’s in Sam talks

Jun 29 2007

by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle

SAM ALLARDYCE was in Barcelona today talking to Edmilson in his bid to bring the Brazilian World Cup winner to St James’ Park.

The word from Spain is that the 30-year Barcelona defender and holding midfield player is willing to agree terms – although he is currently recovering from a knee operation – and United now need to talk to Barcelona.

Edmilson will be back in action in October or November, and Big Sam is clearly prepared to wait for him because he feels he will be gaining a world-class player for what looks like being a nominal fee.

The Chronicle revealed United’s interest in Edmilson yesterday, and sure enough Allardyce, Freddy Shepherd’s son Kenneth and European scout Paul Montgomery flew to Barcelona yesterday afternoon and talked to Edmilson and his representative in a luxury hotel last night, with talks continuing today.

This was after Barcelona president Joan Laporte gave United permission to talk to Edmilson, who has one year left on his contract, at lunchtime yesterday.

The Chronicle also revealed last night that Barcelona’s signing of Thierry Henry had put long-time United target Eidur Gudjohnsen’s future at the Nou Camp in doubt.

While they have been in Barcelona, the United delegation took the opportunity to talk to Laporte about the Icelandic international striker.

Gudjohnsen had one season under Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers in 1999-2000 before switching to Chelsea, where he was often a goalscoring thorn in United’s side.

With Arsenal seemingly likely to make a move for either Michael Owen or Oba Martins, the preliminary discussions with Barcelona about Gudjohnsen show Big Sam would move quickly for a replacement should either of his two main strikers exercise the get-out clauses in their contracts.

Allardyce is really getting his teeth into his new job at St James’ and he was the front man in yesterday’s announcement about the new sponsorship tie-up with Carling.

Then it was a quick journey to Newcastle Airport, a flight to Heathrow and then on to Barcelona.

At about the time Allardyce was boarding his plane for Spain, his horse European Dream was finishing last in the GNER Seaton Delaval Trophy Handicap at Gosforth Park.

However, he is hoping he will turn out to be a World Cup winner by signing Edmilson, who lifted the trophy with his Brazilian colleagues in South Korea and Japan in 2002.

My information is that Edmilson is keen to try his luck in the Premiership and United could be in business.

Allardyce feels he has a chance to pull off what would be a tremendous signing, and that new owner Mike Ashley and his advisors will go along with it.

Otherwise, why would he have taken the trouble to go to Barcelona and talk to the player?

Barcelona club doctor Ramon Cugat reckons Edmilson will be out for “four to six months” after putting the player under the knife for the third time.

Two weeks have already passed and Edmilson could be playing again around mid-autumn time.

It is not common practice for clubs to sign players who are injured or who are recovering from surgery in these days of massive transfer fees and wages.

However, United have done it before.

When they brought Nobby Solano back to St James’ Park in August 2005, the little Peruvian did not pull on his beloved black-and-white shirt again until October 23.

United also sold Scott Parker to West Ham – just a fortnight after their former skipper had had a hernia operation at the end of last season.

Barcelona have moved to play down speculation which has suggested Edmilson is primed for a move to Newcastle.

Sky Sports News understands that a delegation from Newcastle has arrived in Barcelona to discuss a potential move for the Brazilian, but now, club director Txiki Beguiristain has suggested the player still has a future at Camp Nou.

Any move for the 30-year-old defender, who can also play as a holding midfielder, would be complicated by the fact he will be out for the next four to six months having undergone knee surgery.

Newcastle are known to be keen to add to their defensive ranks, with manager Sam Allardyce having culled large numbers from the squad he inherited at St James' Park.

Whether Edmilson makes the move to the North East, though, remains very much a subject of conjecture.

"Edmilson is our player and we are not negotiating his exit," said Beguiristain.

"The important thing is his recuperation, after the surgery, for him to play with us for the second part of next season.

"The doctor is confident for a December return and be ready for the New Year."

Well, the Robledo brothers played in the top flight in England for the Toon. What's the answer btw?
