Luque on his way?

THE TYNE IS RIGHT TO LUQUE AT EXIT DOOR

By Alan Nixon

NEWCASTLE UNITED are ready to sell Spanish flop Albert Luque - with Barcelona and Real Madrid making shock moves to take him home.

Luque has had a nightmare time on the Tyne since joining in a £9.5million deal from Deportivo La Coruna but he could be sensationally rescued by one of the giants.

Despite his poor form and a recurring hamstring problem, caused by a combination of the cold and Newcastle's training pitch, he has been miserable on and off the pitch.

But in Spain Luque is still rated highly and a move would suit everyone, especially as Luque can make a bid for the World Cup squad AND play in the Champions League.

Barca have made a shock inquiry and would take their former target if Newcastle are reasonable on the price. Luque was born in Barcelona, where coach Frank Rijkaard is looking for a recruit or two as he chases the La Liga title and Champions League glory.

He can play through the middle or wide on the left - two areas where even the mighty Catalans have been caught short because of injuries recently.

And agents working for Real are also checking on Luque's health and welfare - with a possible swap on the cards. They have right back Michel Salgado and even Toon old boy Jonathan Woodgate as potential makeweights.

Salgado could lose his place to Brazilian new arrival Cicinho. Both will want to play in the build-up to next summer's World Cup Finals and the veteran Spaniard will not take kindly to being dropped. A move to Madrid may appeal to Luque more although the struggling giants would have to get a full-time coach installed before committing to a firm offer.

Either way Newcastle now seem sure to be sellers, clawing back some of their cash for boss Graeme Souness to re-invest on other positions in the next transfer window.

Luque only arrived in August, after impressing against Newcastle when Deportivo knocked them out of the Intertoto Cup.

But the move quickly turned sour. He played just twice for the Toon before being ruled out injured for two months.

He has made a tentative comeback, but has yet to be on the winning side for Newcastle after five games for the club.

United want Celtic's Stilian Petrov and could mount a £3m bid if Luque goes and gives them cash and leaves them with a vacancy.

Shows what a complete twat the bloke writing this really is...

In the same sentence he calls him a flop and then says both Barcelona and Real Madrid want him!

Not worth the discussion tbh, he's going nowhere...

Bullshit or not, I'm looking forward to Leazes seeing this.

And even more to how he'll determine why both Barca and Real would be interested in someone so shite! ;)

Regardless of the truth or otherwise of this 'story', what the hell is going on with him.

The last two games he's never even got off the bench, and Shola seemed shite on Saturday. How's he ever going to get match fit if he's getting no time on the pitch?

Petrov is still a good player imo anyway.

How many good players in Scotland have to move south and be crap before we get the message. And he only shows up for half the games he plays.

And how many shit players here prove to be a success there...

If we can get our money back, I'd sell him in a flash. I just get the feeling he is a luxury we can't afford when there are other pressing priorities. Admittedly, this is based on intuition rather than watching him play, but I'm fairly sure he was a panic buy rendered superfluous by Owen and N'Zogbia breaking through.

The whole situation doesn't make sense. The problem seems to be that he's never going to be picked ahead of Shearer and Owen up front and given Souness' inept and non-existent tactics and game plan, I don't think he'll shine playing on the wing. He's had about 3-4 weeks of full training now and the odd sub appearance, hopefully he will get games soon as there's no other way for him to prove himself.

I definitely think he was a panic buy, most people would probably agree on that. If we hadn't got Owen (and it was far from certain that we'd get him), we would have been stuck with Shearer and Ameobi. Luque's still a good player from what I've seen of him. He will need more games than Emre though to adapt to the Premiership.

Not exactly had much time to prove he's a flop tbh.

Doing a good job so far though ;)

Well if he's now match-fit and Ameobi is playing ahead of him, then there's something more to it. Whether that's him playing badly, we'll see.

Aye, although it's usually the blue half. He'll not want to give Celtic a penny more than he's worth. ;)

a bit ironic considering your dog like devotion to the moaning french whinger. If Luque went running to the papers every other week you would give him more of a chance I guess
