In both scenarios it makes you question, does this make his daughter only able to attract such people? Poor woman. I cannot believe that I think this, but, the only way this can be an alright story is if he didn’t have a daughter. My brother is married to a Mackem. She is a lovely woman. Her family are nice people. If anything, I find my brother harder work than them 🤣 As Dazzler says, they are so lacking in self awareness that they don't realise in their made uo stories they come across as the sad bitter bastards they are. Like there was one a few weeks back where a grown man mackem was abusing a Newcastle fan and his young daughter for wearing football shirts. Their obsessions are quite something but highly amusing. That's why I love this thread. It's not really about Sunderland or their club really. It's 90% about the weirdos that inhabit that board, which like Sunderland til I die is unintentionally hilarious.
Craig 12325
Its all bollocks man. I'm sure many of us, if not all of us have mates or acquaintances who are Mackems. I do and I've got a couple of work colleagues who are as well. They're not sub-human they're thoroughly decent people, we just don't align on footballing allegiances that's all. Would any of us make those allegiances the focus of a wedding reception? Maybe fleetingly, and in jest but the main event?! Get fucked man!
Howmanheyman 43823
I've known a few good lads who were mackems and the odd one or two who were loathsome creatures, the former far outnumbered the latter but I'm not unhinged enough to pretend otherwise.

My experience is one of extremes. Some really canny lads and lasses, two of which I am incredibly grateful for helping me through some really rough times. Then there was this other lad who I associated with quite a bit through mutual university friends. An absolute bell end. Always bought football into everything, where he'd literally froth at the mouth loke he had rabies and a was undergoing a stroke at the same time. Once we went out in Sunderland and along with other friends stayed over at their house. He offered me outside. The next morning, his fiancé had to make him sheepishly apologise to me. We were invited to his wedding, by her. Once again, he started this football shit up AT HIS OWN WEDDING. Honestly, having thought about it, it's possible these stories are actually true.

Renton 27739
I'd also say two things are broadly true. It's true we have a superiority complex over them. I do in terms of clubs and cities, we're simply just better than them in nearly every metric. But secondly, neatly all of them have a chip on their shoulders about it, even the canny ones. SMB and FTM are actually quite telling. We feel superior and think they're sad, and they react in hatred. Oh well. The big difference is that we are not local rivals. I have no desire to live in London or to support Arsenal, however, I do like the occasional trip to London and I accept that, in my lifetime, Arsenal have been far more successful than us. I don't feel inferior to London at all. I have no interest in it.

I don't feel inferior to London at all. I have no interest in it. Absolutely agree. If I lived in Sunderland, maybe somewhere relatively nice like Seaburn, I'd not fret about it. It's an okay place to live but not a cultural rival to Newcastle. Newcastle is, and always will be, the regional capital. The cities don't compete in that way just as we don't with London. So I think the issue is, they make it more than just about football. I've seen it before in Liverpool vs Manchester, but tbf both those cities are competing to an extent, with Manchester coming out on top in recent decades. But Sunderland is really just a dormitory town with piss poor transport links and a lack of self identity (even their name is a piss take). Accept your place mackems!!!! 1
GrahamTaylor5 1781
I think a factor for Sunderland is that they probably win on the theatre front. People who use this either live in places like Seaburn or they understand that the cities are not competing. Noone would go shopping in Sunderland. I went on a night out when I was at Sunderland University and it was so underwhelming.

They have one theatre with higher capacity, the Empire, but we have a gem in the Theatre Royal, but also have the Live theatre, Northern Stage, Tyne, and the People's. They do get some exclusives and some things first and that's the only time I have ever had the need to go there. Can't think of a single other reason to go considering for me access is much worse than Newcastle anyway. That's the same for most of the NE.

Craig 12325
This whole "our city is better than yours" rhetoric flies largely over my head these days. I'm indifferent to it principally from the position that it's not up for debate. They want to argue the Empire Theatre is 'superior' to the Theatre Royal? They're welcome to think what they like just as I'm welcome to not agree with them and not need to challenge my blood pressure by getting worked up about something they're never going to be put right on. Renton 27739
Since they've been promoted and done well that place is more insane than ever. They have a thread numbering over a hundred posts on a tackle Big Joe made. 🤷♂️ And lots of threads like this one. https://www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/this-is-wearside-derby-day-display.1663818/page-19 That'll show us! Gemmill 62983
Fuck me. Who can come up with the most niche parochial display? That would be confusing to 90% of people in the ground including nearly all of their lot, never mind people tuning in on the telly.
NJS 5277
I've always found it amusing that they've taken "black cats" - obviously meant to be the domesticated "lucky" ones and turned it into fucking black panthers which have as much to do with them as Athletic fucking Bilbao.

Alex 42070
They needed a vote for their nickname. They copied their stadium name off someone else. They moved away from their original home. They invent stories about historical links with other clubs and their being told how much other fans admire them and their club. It’s little wonder their identity is so intrinsically linked with us. As far as identity goes they haven’t really got much else.

Gerrin! I would be gutted if we had a display aimed at another club. Isn't the whole part of the display aimed at championing our own team/players. I am all for the booing of players, it is part of the fun of the game but creating a display aimed at another team feels just a bit sad. When Isak comes back, all for booing him when he touches the ball, it is slightly comical. If we aimed a display at him, that is one that could be aimed at Bruno, or Waltermade or Tonali. It is just a waste. 4
