So the Lords have delayed the tax credit cuts. Be interesting to see if Osborne climbs down on the severity of the cuts and whether the Tories exact their revenge on the Lords as threatened....

So what exactly is the point of the House of Lords if what they did was constitutionally inappropriate? Are they there to simply rubber stamp the government's bills? These changes weren't in the Conservative manifesto so as far as I can see the Lords were well within their rights to oppose them.

And what would be more constitutionally inappropriate than to flood the Lords with a load of extra Tories to make sure that stuff like this sails through in future, which is reportedly what Cameron has in mind? Not to mention fiscally irresponsible given that they get paid £300 a day - something a bit wrong with paying someone £300 a day for the express purpose of robbing someone else of £1000 a year.

The whole concept of the Lords is flawed. Bunch of inbred aristos and bishops wtf are they doing there? Plus a whole load of political appointees. Needs ripping up and starting again as there is a genuine need for an independent review body to the legislature. Its naturally conservative so the fact it did its job by challenging a bill which wasnt in the tory manifesto shows what a vicious and divisive proposal it is. Seems like the poll tax all over again.

There'd be absolutely no point to the Lords if it was filled with govt yes men and I'd hope even cameron wouldnt have the stones to try on that level of farce

Blair spoilt it when he got rid of nearly all the froot loop hereditary peers. Although what they stood for was appalling they definitely haven't replaced it with anything better.

Abolish the House of Lords.

Replace it with a fully elected (and smaller) second chamber.

There really isn't a need for over 800 people in the House of Lords. It's antiquated, far too large, and a slap in the face of democracy.

The American Senate is essentially their House of Lords. It has 100. And it's elected. Imagine the Yanks doing democracy better than us!

I'm pleased they're putting the buffers on the Tories tax credit plans, but it is a colossal waste of money.

Lords is a nice lag for many who have served their country in various ways over many years. They also have a wealth of knowledge and are less aligned than in their younger days as the many rebellions have shown.

Get rid of the Commons now you're talking! :)

What's annoying is that a one off penalty tax against Amazon, Apple, Google and so on...Would cover this for 2/3 years giving time to prepare other countermeasures. This 4 billion odd they are scratching around for is not a lot of money.

There needs to be a tax on second homes and second cars and a 1.5% transaction tax on investment banks and hedge funds per deal. If you want surplus that's the way forward.

Cancel Trident ffs! A land based deterrent if absolutely needed would suffice.

You can deliver nukes so many different ways nowadays having 3 subs at sea round the clock is ridiculous.

At the last budget most people were better off at the expense of some of the worst off. Why do that when money is meant to be so tight? Rhetorical question, obviously. Which means CT will probably answer it. Except he won't now I've said that. Or maybe he will now I've said that, etc.
