McClaren, Laudrup, Carvs, The tea lady?

It looked pretty likely for a while before you eventually agreed with it

Nah, fair play on that. You've for some thick skin for sticking to your guns for so long while taking a such a pasting on here.

I think you're entirely wrong about this though. All the evidence points to someone like McClaren, at best.

Schteve will knock us back and having put all our eggs in the basket we'll have no other option than to leave John at the helm.

How's that for peshimism?

Who says we couldn't attract Vieria? Maybe it was the club who knocked him back.

We do offer something that is very attractive to managers - job security. Despite the shit that Pardew got from all corners he never appeared to be at serious risk of losing his job.

Well, yes, we might have knocked him back after hearing his demands. I have read some reports saying it was wages and lack of control over player recruitment that led to talks breaking down.

McClaren's record in the Premier League with a well-funded (for the time and their position) Boro:

Roughly the same as Chris Coleman at Fulham.

Pardew's win percentage with us? 38.38%

Downgrade.

This is what Charnley said about what they want from a new man in January. It's clear that their priority is to have a man that will work with what he's given. Not involved in any decision on who to buy, not to complain if they sell without replacements. They have to know their place and bite their tongue in interviews when the squad is left wanting. They have to "trust" that they'll get the player they need in the long run, despite the club desparately needing strikers but only spending a combined £24m in 8 years on all the strikers bought, less than Everton spent on Lukaku alone in one window.

The talk of a philosophy is at odds with that entirely and only pays lip service to the notion of a philosophy. If it was really important that the club looked for players that fit the managers philosophy, then the stuff above could not be the priority. It suggests that the recruitment policy will change with the manager, which is clearly a lie given the priority given in their 'wants' to working under the existing model and not complaining.

It suggests that if Sam Allardyce was appointed and followed by Guardiola, then the entire squad would be rebuilt to reflect the style of each manager. The whole point of the structure in place is that Alan Carr dictates what represents a bargain and whichever coach comes in has to make do with the players he has to accomodate the style he wants to play.

That's why they don't really care if it's Vieira, Garde, Laudrup, McClaren or Carver. The philosiphy doesn't matter. It would be nice if one of the better managers in that list went along with the conditions and the fans could be won over with a positive change, but that's not the most important thing. If no-one else will, then Carver will always do as he's told.

sound mint doesn't it?

i can just imagine the following exchange playing out.

"hi lee, so about this player. any chance we can get him across the line? injuries have meant i've been playing sammy ameobi as my lone striker for half a season now"

"no. we might save a few hundred grand if we wait a few transfer windows"

"oh, but what about the replacement for the star player we sold? it's been a year now, the fans are getting on my back"

"it can wait. you bought into our structure and strategy, remember? you trust us, don't you?"

"urm, er, well."

"now get out in front of the tv cameras and dedicate the first win in ten to Mike"

Charnley's statement is frankly depressing if you love this cub. You just cannot run a football set up that way, you need to grasp the bull by the horns in football and it can reap benefits, it's not just about spending for the sake of it but growing your squad to improve which in turn gives you a greater chance to maximise your commercial potential. You hang around waiting for the ideal scenario to get a player at the very best financial deal and you're going to end up disappointed most times, and your targets or priorities may have changed in that time from say a centre half to a striker depending on injuries etc. We're royally fucked and no matter the size and potential of this club, it means fucking Jack Shit when the potential is deliberately suffocated from within from the very top.

Bit pessimistic that.

Also conflated with petulance.

Love the cool sunglasses smiley because someone predicted we wouldn't get relegated. If you're in mid table at the half way point and go on a bad run, is it a good prediction to say you won't get relegated when you end up 90 minutes away from relegation from such a safe position?

It's a better prediction than one that doesn't come to pass.

That Charnley statement is way out of date now. Mike tore that up and wiped his bum with it when he gave his interview. We're CL-bound now and you're all pessimists for thinking otherwise.
