That I did not know. Must admit it’s ages since I’ve been into the albums he’s produced (in terms of new stuff being released). But I did really like his work on Surfer Rosa, Pod and In Utero back in the day. That’s fucking disgusting though.

I think it's entirely reasonable to speak ill of that particular dead. I wish there was a hell he could roast in.

I've been struggling with this place for a while and unfortunately it's shit like this and/or the reaction to some of our players like MIggy and the subsequent pile on by the mindless few that have given the place a stench that just won't air out.

@spongebob toonpants do you have personal knowledge of this? I don't know if it is true or not. I never met Albini but I know people who have, does that make them fans of kiddy porn? The people I say have nothing but kind words to say about him as do people like Kim Deal or PJ Harvey who I doubt would put up with anyone like the man you are calling out.

A couple of things I do know.

Albini was regarded as a cunt by many people because in the 80s hardcore scene; people said a lot of offensive shit to wind people up. He did it as a profession, writing for a few of the Zines of the time. Allegedly every second person he knew on the street would call him an asshole because he had no filter.

That article attributed to him is:

Quote
came from a magazine called Forced Exposure. It was a Boston based music magazine that published from 1982-1993. The issue with the Big Black tour diary was the Winter 1988 issue (#13).
Albini would've been a 26 year year old man at the time of writing that.

It's unsavoury and as Albini reaslised when he got older:

Quote

To Albini, back then it was simple. Obviously he didn’t really believe in any of that stuff – if you read his interviews or thought about his music for two seconds, you would pick up on his real politics.

He had no time for people who are “careful not to say things that might offend certain people or do anything that might be misinterpreted”. That was just about seeming good rather than actually being good. “I have less respect for the man who bullies his girlfriend and calls her ‘Ms’ than a guy who treats women reasonably and respectfully and calls them ‘Yo! Bitch’” he told Azerrad. “The point of all this is to change the way you live your life, not the way you speak.” It did not seem to bother him that for people who don’t know your innermost thoughts and desires, the way you speak is the way you live; it doesn’t matter if you, personally, believe your politics are sound.

As the years wore on, his perspective started to shift. “I can’t defend any of it,” he told me. “It was all coming from a privileged position of someone who would never have to suffer any of the hatred that’s embodied in any of that language.” For years, Albini had always believed himself to have airtight artistic and political motivations behind his offensive music and public statements. But as he observed others in the scene who seemed to luxuriate in being crass and offensive, who seemed to really believe the stuff they were saying, he began to reconsider. “That was the beginning of a sort of awakening in me,” he said. “When you realise that the dumbest person in the argument is on your side, that means you’re on the wrong side.”

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/aug/15/the-evolution-of-steve-albini-if-the-dumbest-person-is-on-your-side-youre-on-the-wrong-side

I have to ask myself would a fan of kiddy porn go to this much trouble - https://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2009/dec/09/steve-albini-chicago-secret-santa

You all might be right, he might deserve to rot in hell, especially with the way the weird cunt looked, aye @Ayatollah Hermione?

But you probably you should know Albini because of his "socialist" ideals has been the target of right winged critics and trolls for a number of years.
Also you need to know a little more about the author of the piece Joshua Goldberg. Have a good read, you might find some irony.

Quote

Joshua Ryne Goldberg (born May 14, 1995) is an American internet troll,[1] convicted of attempting a bombing on the 14th anniversary of the September 11 attacks[2] while posing as an Islamic terrorist affiliated with ISIS.[3][4][5]

What's American rightwing like to call those they like to target, oh yeah pedophiles? If Albini was one, then it's good that he is dead.

But if he wasn't, as seems more likely, well as someone in the comments for spongebob's link put it best:

Quote
Hi there - felt the need to respond to this as Steve Albini is too dead to respond personally and his family are likely too busy grieving his sudden death. I had no connection to him beyond awareness of his life and career.

The uncharitable interpretation of your motives for writing this piece would be opportunistic defamation of a newly-deceased celebrity for clicks, but a more charitable one would be that you're simply concerned about some ostensibly gross aspects of Steve Albini's career you heard about in passing, which would be totally cool and reasonable for you to be wary of. I'll try to assume the latter, but I see some cause for concern given that you appear to have derived much of your article from Wikipedia and don't appear to be particularly familiar with the subject matter, right down to your claim that "very few people know about" what you've clearly recently discovered.

On the contrary, Albini's performatively edgy early years arguably defined him, and followed him throughout his career and he routinely denounced his past behaviour as he aged. His friendship with Sotos, a fairly well-known and controversial figure in the realm of provocative art rather than the fringe pornographer you portray him as, was likewise no secret.

Indeed, a whole 10 seconds of google searching returns an article where Albini addresses both:

https://guitar.com/news/music-news/steve-albini-rapeman-inexcusable-edgelord-shit-offence/

Now, if you wish to join the debate about the ethics of such provocative and disturbing art and where people should draw the line when it comes to their subject matter and source material, dive in - it's been raging for decades and neither begins nor ends with Albini or Sotos. You and I probably agree on a lot of it.

However, given your evident lack of familiarity with both of your targets (your decision to attribute extracts from Sotos' works as direct statements from the artist himself is either conscious misinformation or simple journalistic malpractice, neither is great) and your conscious choice to invoke Jimmy Saville in the minds of your readers (and by extension the image of a systemic and prolific abuser of children hiding in plain sight and weilding institutional power to protect themselves), I have to say there's reason to doubt the purity of your intentions, to say nothing of the timing. If you did shoddy and rushed copy-paste research to quickly validate a pre-formed conclusion while people are mourning Albini, then fine, whatever, we all make mistakes and take the easy route sometimes, we all have bad days. But there's still time to re-evaluate your conclusions and try to rise above such rash opportunism in future. Or at very least, change that deplorable and irresponsible clickbait headline.

Just remember what George Washington once said, "Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

That's probably enough for me.

This was shared with me by a friend who was much more aware of/a fan of Albini than I was. He was pretty shook up by it and to be honest I didn't feel the need to look into it very deeply, considering the subject matter.

I'm sad to hear you're not enjoying the forum, and I'd be gutted if it was something I posted that drove you away. There's not that many of us punk rock MotoGP fans to go round

I'm sorry, sammy, but this sounds like exactly the kind of apologism that protected the likes of Savile for so long, "look at what he did for the kids" and all. In the absolute best case scenario here, you're asking us to defend someone who talked about his appreciation of gross paedophilia because he was doing so "for the lols". It's not much of an argument, is it? I mean, would it really be that tricky, even if you felt like pretending you got off on child rape was a fun thing to do, to maybe, like, not pretend like you got off on child rape? 🤷‍♀️

Well that's horrific news if true but not massively surprising. Predators flock to the creative industries like flies to shit, and the "alternative" music scene has been the wild-west of the creative industries for fucking decades.

You don't get ahead in that industry without being at least an enabler. Gullible and damaged or not.

Hey Martin, I'm probably digging a bigger hole for myself but I don't think that is what I said.

Over the years I've read a lot about Albini and spent the last few days reading a lot more and there is no doubt some of the stuff he said and wrote is unforgivable, I was only trying to give context to it (and how it was common in the 80s hardcore scene), not justify it and definitely not brush it off that it was "for the lols".

All the gross and despicable things Albini wrote have been on the internet since near day one and he's been taken to task over them many a time - https://melmagazine.com/en-us/story/steve-albini-counsel-culture-interview

Again I reiterate, I have no idea if he is what the internet troll, neo-nazi and Philosophy of Rape advocate, J Goldberg, has decided to tag him as, something this person did only after Albini can no longer respond and his family is too busy grieving, so why didn't he do this sooner?

No actual journalist, fellow musician/colleague or officer of the law have ever actually taken it up with him makes for another interesting discussion, it's not like Albini had Saville levels of fame and infamy to avoid any of this.

Let's be clear, what was written by Steve Albini is despicable and there is no justifiable reason why you would.

Anyway I'd rather it not be "the weird thing I die on my hill for it" - I've got plenty of my own shite I can do that for.
