Was his third conviction for assault (just looked it up). I'm supposing the nutted player reported it as such and in law a football pitch isn't anything goes territory, in reality it's no different to the street. His problem with the SFA was that they understandably banned him for it. Part of the ban was served while he was in prison and the SFA tried to make it that the ban only started when he got out. I’ve heard him on a couple of podcasts and he came across well.
