To date, improvements have been limited to a few morale-boosting measures put in place when players have been travelling. A completely rebuilt training facility is probably “three or four years away” but it will rival any in the division. The likelihood is that this will involve relocation, an area of expertise for Reuben, whose family are long-term property investors on Tyneside. “We’ve done a lot of work on this already,” one figure says. “We’ve got a good steer on what’s possible. It’s going to be exciting.” The owners have regular informal dialogue with the first-team squad, beyond visiting the dressing room after the disappointing FA Cup defeat to Cambridge. “There’s much better communication with players,” one dressing-room source says. “There are messages after games, either via the manager or the captain. We get a ‘well done’ or a ‘keep going, we’re in this together’. That means something.” The Nine Bar at St James’ will “soon” be renamed Shearer’s in honour of Alan Shearer, Newcastle’s record goalscorer and former captain and manager. This reverses a contentious decision taken under Ashley. Discussions have also taken place with Shearer, a columnist for The Athletic, about bringing his statue onto club land — “where it belongs,” according to a senior source. At present, it stands just outside. Results have been difficult to stomach but there is satisfaction with Howe’s wider impact since replacing Bruce. “He’s a great coach and a brilliant guy. He’s obsessed with keeping us up — he works all day and night,” one of our sources says. “He’s so professional.
