Donnie Darko. Tried to watch it all but I was too fucked by the time they stuck a news break in the middle.

Class film though and the website (if it's still up) is well worth a look as it does help explain some stuff.

Make your own mind up about it tbh. Death of the author and all that

I feel like that should mean something to me but it's years since I read through it :D

I watched a few over the past week.

The Longest Day - still a great film, never feels like it's on for too long.

Sons of the Desert - Laurel and Hardy go on a piss up convention, tell their wives Ollie's Dr has ordered him to go on a cruise, boat sinks killing everyone, they have to live in the attic. In the SLP top ten. FACTOID.

The Day After Tomorrow - Hmmmm...

Sorry, it probably doesn't. The concept of 'Death of the Author' iirc is that once a book (can be applied to films, etc.) is completed then it can take on multiple meanings given by the reader or viewer in this case. Even meanings that were never intended in the first place. It especially applies to something like 'Donnie Darko' imo.

Oh I see now. Yeah I agree but it definitely can help to hear someone else's perspective with some films. 2001 is a prime example of that. The first time I watched it I didn't get it at all but Happy Face posted a link to website about it earlier in this thread and after viewing that I am watching it with a different perspective and enjoying it a lot more (although this may also have something to do with a number of things such as me knowing what to expect with it, me being older and actually giving it my full attention when I watch it).

Regardless I still think the Donnie Darko website (iirc) does explain or rather expand on some things without stopping you from applying your own meanings.

Also (again iirc) I'm sure the guy who made DD said he wanted the film and the website to go hand in hand so you could consider them to be a combined artistic statement.

Aye, I'm sure the websites are canny interesting reading. My comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek but I meant the bit re: making your own mind up about the meaning. Doing an English degree has scarred my for life tbh :)

That must be I have no clue about some of the things you post. I usually just keep quiet though so I don't appear to be the uneducated oaf that I am <_<

I really wanted to like it but I couldn't. I just didn't care about any of the characters or what they were doing though the fact that I was very tired and a bit drunk probably didn't help.

Grudge 2 (Yank version) - Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!

I saw an ad for that recently, and it reminded me that I wanted to see the original (Japanese) version. Has anyone seen that, and is it worth a go?

It's not as engaging as Goodfellas but it's still pretty darn good. Give it another go when you're feeling more receptive.

Mean Streets.

Had to blow the cobwebs off this DVD, first time i'd viewed it in a long time. I must say one of the thing's I like about this film was at the time Coppola had took the genre to a level in which everyone was focused with the Mafia and a more capitalistc approach to gangster films, where Scorsese actually went in the complete opposite direction with it being a more gritty and less glorified approach to a gangster film. Keitel is excellent trying to justify his own actions due to his religious beliefs. But of course for me this is one of my favourite roles of Mr De Niro, he's absolutely brillant as Johnny Boy, everything about the character for me was superb, how he was always on edge and could explode at the slightest thing, De Niro really did play a blinder here. Absolutely love the scene when he's introduced when walking in the bar with Jumping Jack Flash playing in the background.

Guest Patrokles

Casino - Didn't really like it, by the end I just wished it would hurry up and finish.

THat's what generally happens at the end. Nice.

Well before I went to see The Departed I was saying I wonder how long before Gimme Shelter makes an appearance and low and behold it was on from the first second. :o
