This is exactly where I’m at in my Newcastle WhatsApp chat with friends. There are one or two of us who are supremely confident we’ve done enough for champions league already but a majority still fear an old Newcastle-style collapse and won’t say it out loud until it’s practically mathematically secured for fear of jinxing it.

I keep imploring them to trust these lads. They are playing like they believe they’re one of the top five sides in the country. We should start believing them in them too. They’re playing with a swagger and I love how they’re speaking openly about qualifying for the champions league now, it feels completely different to a couple or years back when no one wanted to admit we were in with a chance. This feels different - they know they’re good enough and I’m convinced they are going to get the job done.

We’ve been in (excellent) form  for a month though. We had a good spell just after new year. We had a good few weeks in the autumn. We’ve not been consistent though. I don’t share your mates’ caution but I understand it completely…we’re a streaky team. Tonali played all the way through defeats at home by Bournemouth and Fulham and in the Fulham cup defeat…he’s been largely brilliant but there was a month where he was as average as everyone else..

Depends on the model. Some just look at the position, others look at the relative positions of defenders, the keeper, etc.

How do they input all this data and follow the game after the restart? :cuppa:

It's also experience isn't it. Experience of playing the cup final two years ago, of playing in the Champions League, of having been in tight European races and of having played and consistently beaten top sides.

I think some people in the media like the idiot Simon Jordan still continue to quesiton Howe's ability to get more success but I think many of them are now waking up to the fact that we are going to be a massive problem for not just your Chelsea's and Spurs but also the City's and Liverpool's going forward.

If another club had won a cup and smashed their way to 3rd in the league there would have been massive hype, I think we're still going a bit under the radar but that's fine.

I am really loathe to wade into this since I'm fairly sure it's more about winding Gemmill up than the actual detail,

Relentless consistency will be the issue for a title challenge, and it's something we've yet to display over an extended period, but if you look at a form table for the last 15 games, it looks like this:

If we really have turned some sort of psychological corner, next season could be canny exciting. Especially if we strengthen significantly in the summer.

Well no, I think we’ll qualify for the champions league but the story of the season is we’re due a dip in form…

Happy to oblige

I was looking at our run in yesterday and bar Ipswich, think we will struggle to get anymore points. I really do, that’s not an easy run in at all, especially with Everton playing much better of late.

Squeaky bum time I’m afraid

Clearly you've forgotten how we do things here.

Btw in case you want to disuss Tonali, obviously head on over to the Harvey Barnes thread.

Where you can also talk about Longstaff

I understand xG and why it’s useful but would like it if someone can explain one thing about it?

So there is two identical chances created right, one falls to Isak and one falls to Hoijlund. Are they the same xG? Does it take into account the quality of the player the chance falls to?

If not, isn’t that a massive flaw?

There are loads and loads of flaws with it, though it still can be useful just not in isolation (without context).
