Fair play, it’s a good goal but he runs the length of the pitch without a single opponent putting a challenge in. It’s not exactly Puskas goal material.

It's better than a good goal mate, it's bloody great.

It was more a generalist point - we all toe the line where needed. The podcast Shearer is surely more natural than what we get on MOTD

He still licks their arses on the podcast and calls Man U just 'United' a lot of the time.

Got to toe the line doesn't he

But he swears on the podcast oooooo the fucking hard man.

It's not even toeing the line, if you're constantly hanging around with shit then eventually it starts to soak in.

Aye it does my head in when people with no allegiance to either Manchester club or aren't from the area call them just City or United. Nobody called Sheffield Wednesday just Wednesday, it was always Sheff Wed, or Sheffield/Sheff United for the blades. I can't remember anyone not from the North West calling Man City just City until their dominance which makes me think it's a media/success led thing. I can't remember where I seen it but someone in the media circles a few years ago let the cat out of the bag about presenters/pundits being actively encouraged to make it City/United only and when you look at sky and TNT's graphics this kind of reinforces that for me as there's literally no reason to omit it from every other club bar the Sheffield clubs which is their go to excuse so they have to use their full names although in commentary this soon gets forgotten if they're playing Man United.

This stuff used to bother me. I'm indifferent to it these days though. I'm quite comfortable in the knowledge i'll never refer to them as 'United' and 'City'. What others choose to do is up to them.

still does me.

no issues as hmhm says with people from that area who use united and city as way of differentiating between the 2 manchesters. once away from greater manchester, even for people who've latched on and gloryseek 'support' the 2 clubs it pisses me off.

skysports/bbc etc have effectively rebranded them both and it’s outrageously disrespectful to other citys and uniteds, even though on the whole I'll say newcastle more than newcastle united.

if ever im talking to a stranger in a pub unless they've got a manc accent and they say united or city I'll always ask them who the fuck they're talking about, just to be a pedantic cunt.

It's definitely been a case of mild media rebranding. When it's blanket 'Newcastle' all over TNT/BT and Sky and now even the BBC it isn't a case of one kid doing it his way, another on another show doing it another, it's got to be by design to be as consistent as it has for the last decade or so? That's effectively rebranding for me. I actually used to shout howay United as much as howay the lads or howay Newcastle. I think it would boil my piss even more living in the south and hearing some Tim-nice-but-dim dipshit saying United or City. There'd definitely be a conversation.

Sky's "United versus Newcastle" is a hate crime imo.

I used to have an Irish boss who "supported" the scouse cunts who used the "United"  when we first met but my constant corrections finally forced him to adopt "Man United" though he stopped short of my preferred "the Manc cunts"

and just to further emphasise the point...

in the dan burn interview for the pre match press conference posted in the bilbao thread, he refers to man city as man city, which is what all nufc supporters i know do too. not 'city' which has become the go to name now for anybody working for sky/bbc and the likes. fucking nauseating.

shearer has been referring to man utd as simply 'united' now for fucking donkey's years, he should be fucking ashamed of himself.

Hmm, I have to argue about the rags being referred to as 'just' united, as during commentary (and punditry) they seem to be consistently referred to (whether in their own games or constantly during unrelated games in sad attempt to keep them relevant) as manchester united, not even man united - this, i'm sure, is a club 'demand' for a consistent branding, so I disagree about the media being encouraged in the other direction. I'm sure shearer does it too, but if he misses a few prefixes I can see how you guys would spot it easier than me. Btw, they aint even from Manchester, falling outside the city boundaries, maybe greater manchester but they also shouldn't be trying to hijack anything from the crest.  Harrumphh!!

Unsurprisingly round here it's "United" and "City". Even by the lads who support Everton or Liverpool.

Honestly, I think there are may more people who abide by this convention than don't. Having Shearer saying "hem hem, I think you'll find it's Manchester United versus Leeds United" is a bit like having King Cnut turn back the tide.

Manchester United, aye sometimes it's the full title and I don't mind that at all as it's who they're talking about, we sometimes, but not nearly enough, get called Newcastle United but here's one I absolutely can't understand, why do a load of pundits, (usually ex-liverpool) insist on calling them 'Liverpool Football Club'? I'm not going to confuse them with anyone else?

@catmag is too busy flogging her worn grundies to bother much with us nowadays

Probably too busy chastising her offspring for using "the word" to worry about us.

* I'm sure she wandered in her not too long ago and used the work herself.

United *clap, clap, clap* was a very popular chant at our matches. Does it ever even get sung now by our lot?

A scouser Liverpool fan I worked with (technically he was from the Wirral) reckoned it’s used to take the piss out of Man Utd after they drop ‘football club’ from the badge on their kits. Not sure if that’s true or just an excuse for their superiority complex. Doesn’t really excuse or explain pundits using either way.

it's been remixed. now some people chant 'united' and others respond with 'toon' no clapping involved. it's a fucking abomination, bit like some techno mixes of pink floyd songs.

I don't even recognise half of our chants now.

They've been using it for decades.

By the way, heard there's 3,000 basques there tonight so let's hope the social media NUFC fans who are diehard super fans can put their phones down and let their throats open up. Also let's hope Hank Wank and the other international brigade can be arsed because these lads in L7 will make a racket all match.

Is it not to give their version of what lfc may be an acronym of, rather than the better known "load (of) fucking cunts"..?

Didn't there used be an annoying, smug Celtic fan on here a good while back? Anyway, the hoops of Shamrock Rovers had a better European away result in Athens than Celtic did against midtdylland* in Denmark, a last minute goal denying them a win unlike the Glasgow side who got beaten 3-1.

*If it's correctly spelled that's luck.
