Very random

I heard a word on the radio the other day and it immediately filled me with a warm nostalgia and I can’t decide really think why. Can only assume it’s maybe linked to old American world war 2 films. I also though one a shame that our language is filled with such scrumptious words that we never get chance to use. I will of course be using it from now on in match day predictions.

The word ladies and gentleman is…..

SMITHEREENS.

Talking about something random popping up that I've never seen for years I noticed something on YouTube about Sven Hassel and his books*, their covers were always striking.

Aye, when I was trudging through the 80’s I quite often had a look in his shop when I got off at central. Don’t recall seeing those particular ones.

Nowhere was the noise of bones crunching while being run over by a tank track better described than in a Sven Hassel book

I never did read any, my dad had a couple of his books but I was more into the Victor, Hotspur and the commando books then.

Sven claimed that his books were based on his service in the Wehrmacht, only part of which is true.
He did join the the Wehrmacht, but since he failed to inform them of his multiple criminal convictions, he spent the entirety of his time in Der Klink.

Oh, aye, and he wasn’t German either- Danish, called Borge Willy Redsted Pedersen.

This is why you need adaptive cruise control. You could have been in the foetal position in the footwell and your car would have continued in an orderly fashion to your destination.

I've dug this book out for you and it's taken me three days to find the passage because the index is fuckin wank 😆 but here we are. I like this passage a lot, there's something really satisfying about the word smithereens. I've not been to Llanberis but I have been to Blaneau Ffestiniogg and the description is very apt there too...

Kids man. Noticed some strange activity on my bank account last, from Google store. Went to investigate and about £50 of charges I didn't recognise. Phoned the bank and all they could do at that time was freeze my card. So now I have a frozen card.

Then I noticed £150 pending on my credit card from Google store, including a payment of £79.99. A bit of investigation and it turns out my youngest has made dozens of microtransactions, and not so micro, for  "Toka Boka" world. I can't afford this amount of money at the moment, I'm on my arse.

Bank and credit card won't help, I've been on my Google account and requested refunds which they might but fuck knows. Anybody got any experience of this?

Gutted my daughter has stolen from me like this, but also genuinely don't know how. She says she just clicked and there was no need for verification? But I've got the full suite of biometrics turned on with two stage verification. I assumed this was service specific but it might actually be decice specific? My card details must have been. On the tablet. If I buy anything I need a thumb print and a code, and for the credit card I need to verify it in the app, why have this when my daughter can get stuff with no security?

I'm removing my payment cards from all my accounts now and will try to plug any security gaps, but still stressed out. Modern life sucks.

I don't know what way google works but with Apple my daughter has to request permission to install any app or make a payment. I'd report it to the bank as fraud and see if they'll refund it.

Her main account is Apple which her mum handles but she has an android for homework which she's abused, she's never done anything like this before.

Neither bank or credit caed will help as its a family member.

I'm hoping Google will refund, they're investigating. Normally if you buy goods you can return them. Google have already closed this game for her so in effect the purchases are now useless. I'm just shocked the security is so shit.

If she's spending it on Toka Boka then I'm guessing she's not that old. I wouldn't look at it as theft and give the kid the benefit of the doubt. Micro transactions are designed to make it feel like it's not real money you're spending and is so easy to do.

This. I had both my kids on the family apple account and had it open initially but told them if they installed anything that cost without speaking to me first, i'd revert it to 'request permission' and recover the costs via pocket money.

Eldest ignored it and was on 'request permission' until she was paying for her own phone. Youngest never did it and so never had the restriction. Sent the eldest potty that she was 3 years older but had to ask for permission whilst her brother didn't.

She's a young 12. I agree, the set up fucking stinks. On a more general note, microtransactions have just also ruined gaming for me. Used yo be you'd pay money up front, buy the game, and from then onwards it was your skill that mattered. Not any more.

Kids do daft stuff that costs you money at the best of times, it's not just an internet-era thing. At her age or maybe a bit younger I racked up £50-ish on my parents' phone bill (so double that now) dialing premium-rate numbers. Not even the dirty stuff either, just pop quizzes and "comedy" and all that other stuff they used to be allowed to advertise in the back of magazines. I totally sympathise with the financial hit (and the general point about microtransactions), but at least you're finding about this straight away rather than when a phone bill pops lands on your doormat months later and can take prompt action to stop it.

Have you done the above Rents? Not trying to be a clever cunt or show you stuff you already know about, I just remembered being asked if I wanted to turn this on for everything on my own account.

Dial-a-disc memories flooding back

British Telecom had 3-digit line for sports news back in the late 80s (it used to be advertised on the back of the phone directory). Can't remember the number but I racked up a fair bill calling that.

Realising that paying an extra quid per quarter to have the bill itemised, Dad soon put paid to it although I largely got away with it as my brother had been calling premium-rate numbers (these WERE the dirty stuff!) and got an absolute kicking for it

Not sure, cheers though, will take a look. I assumed 2 stage verification via my mobile number would cover me but something's obviously gone wrong.

She's permabanned from that tablet now though, I've changed the PIN. She'll be lucky to get her switch back in the next month tbh. And if we don't get the money refunded, it's coming out her bank account. Need to nip this in the bud.
