What people don't seem to get also it's its not just capapcity on the Manchester-London line, it would release capacity on the conventional lines to improve local rail as well as freight. Nothern Power House won't work without it. HS2 was only ever going to be cost effective with the whole "Y" set up as planned. The Leeds line would have served Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds (all directly), and York, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Once that was scrapped the project made little financial sense. By scrapping the Manchester connection, it is now a complete waste of money. And the irony is a lot of the sunk costs was due to having to burrow tunnels through fucking fields to appease tory seats. They are now going to have about 3 trains per hour going through them rather than the 20 envisioned. Yeah, yeah, I'm a nerd. But if this doesn't tell you something about how our long-term politics are fucked you're missing the point (not you ewerk).
