We then upped it to £35 Mill iirc which was also rejected, the prevailing view (again widely reported at the time) was that if that was tweaked a little AND they got a replacement, that would do it. They got the replacement and it was AGAIN widely reported at the time that £40 Mill would do it, but the signed replacement was played as "oh not that replacement" and we got hosed late on, a slight hosing we can well afford. So, you're revisionist shite can stop now Captain Hindsight.
