  6. Considering hes meant to be a bit of a gambler I am surprised he never took this route. Aye there was no guarantees we were going to go straight back up but if he had got Shearer in, who had been planning for this season, and got rid of the high earners, made a couple of sensible signings and got the wage bill down it could have made the club more appealing again if we got back to the Premiership with a reduced wage bill etc and he could have then been in a position to sell and actually claw some money back. Aye its all ifs, buts and maybes but it could have put him in a position where he may have seen some of his money back rather than asking for a crazy price on a club that is losing money, left, right and centre. I have no idea what his plans are but its certainly looking like hes here to stay. The big question is when the firesale is going to start and who will be in charge...
  7. Lee Ryder: It's a bad start for the Toon with Orient scoring after just three minutes. The goal came after a scuffle between Thornton and Barton which ended in Barton's shirt being torn nearly in half. Lee Ryder: Following Barton's foul the referee granted a free kick which saw Dmitriou curl the ball in to be headed past Tim Krul by Jimmy Smith.
  8. CHRIS Hughton is braced for an extended spell in charge of Newcastle United with owner Mike Ashley's £100m price tag no nearer being met. And the club's beleaguered players have been told there is every chance Hughton and fellow coach Colin Calderwood will be in the dugout on the opening day of the season. The hope had been that United would be in different hands by the time they take on West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on August 8. However, the offers on the table, including that of Steve McMahon's Singapore-based Profitable Group, fall well short of Ashley's valuation, and he and managing Derek Llambias are understood to be willing to sit it out rather than sell for less than they feel the club is worth. Meanwhile, the opening day of the campaign draws ever closer, with no one having come in or out, and the necessary rebuilding of the squad on hold. "The players have obviously been asking questions behind the scenes about just what on earth is going on with the takeover," said a source at the club. "Like everybody else, they have been told it is a work in progress, but obviously a lot of them are concerned that the season is only just around the corner. "They have also been told that Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood are more than likely to be in charge for the first few games of the season."
  9. I think they had a similar coloured one about ten years ago, once is bad enough but twice is taking the piss. To be fair I am sure they sold a shit load of them last time round. Certainly seen a lot of them kicking about...

  12. Sports Direct has announced a 91% drop in full-year profits despite increased sales, after the weak pound and investment losses took their toll. The company - controlled by Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley - made a profit of £10.7m in the year to 26 April, against £118.9m a year earlier. Total revenues rose 9% to £1.37bn, with revenues in the UK topping £1bn. Sports Direct said it would not be paying a final dividend in order to concentrate on cutting its £430m debts. "The second half of the year remained challenging, but we are pleased with these solid full year results that reflect the resilience and relevance of our flexible business model, focused on the core principles of retailing," said chief executive Dave Forsey. During the year, the company opened 27 new stores in the UK. The company owns the Sports World chain of stores, as well as brands including Slazenger, Lonsdale and Dunlop.
