Seems great to me. I tried using it at the weekend to find directions between a Belfast city centre hotel and city centre bar and it could identify neither. Google maps managed it without a problem. I got to the bit where it said both systems are really good and the more apple products you've got the better it is, thenstopped reading. If I was a Luddite like Renton and owned a PC built in the last decade and didn't had an iPad, there's no doubt, I would not get an iPhone. Its not just Apple trying to stick it to Google, Google are an aggressive and dangerous company that fucks with what you think is open access to information. GOOGLE faces legal action from American and European regulators over alleged breaches of competition and privacy laws. America’s Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is considering suing the Silicon Valley giant for stifling competition on the internet by manipulating search rankings to favour its own products, accor-ding to leaked documents. In Europe, meanwhile, a regulatory probe has found that Google rode roughshod over privacy laws. The findings may pave the way for expensive lawsuits. The twin threats mark the most concerted clampdown on a multinational since Brussels and Washington launched investigations into Microsoft in the late 1990s. On top of big fines and legal costs, regulators could force Google to make substantial changes to its lucrative search advertising business, sources said. At the heart of the FTC’s investigation is whether the group has manipulated search results so its services achieve a more prominent ranking than competing products. As its financial strength has grown, Google has been moving into other areas, such as smartphones and online retailing. Its critics say the company uses its dominant position in internet search to push out rivals. According to an internal memo at the FTC, the anti-trust watchdog is minded to launch civil proceedings against Google over breaches of competition law. It is also looking at the firm’s growing power in mobile phones. Although Google has yet to make its case before the FTC, the leaked documents are the clearest sign yet that the regulator intends to take drastic action against the company. The European commission is also investigating Google’s search business and could take similarly radical steps to curb its powers. Last month Joaquin Almunia, the competition commissioner, accused it of “using its dominance . . . to foreclose on rival specialised search engines and advertisers”. Google is also in trouble with thc commission over its privacy policies. A letter to be sent this week to Larry Page, the firm’s co-founder, by the information commissioners of all 27 European Union states will warn that the company has breached European law. That could expose it to compensation demands running into hundreds of millions of euros. The letter, a draft of which has been seen by The Sunday Times, insists that Google stop combining private data from products such as its search engine, Gmail and YouTube. Using this data to target individuals with specific advertising is the cornerstone of the company’s hugely profitable business model. “Google empowers itself to collect vast amounts of personal data about internet users, but has not demonstrated [these are] proportionate to the purposes for which they are processed,” says the letter, signed by Christopher Graham, Britain’s information commissioner. It adds: “Combining personal data on such a large scale creates high risks to user privacy.” The watchdogs, which criticise Google for the “absence of any limit concerning the scope of the collection and the potential uses of the personal data”, will demand that it asks for explicit user consent to combine data. Google refused to comment on the letter as it had not yet seen it, but said: “We are confident that our privacy notices respect . . . European data protection laws.” On the FTC inquiry, it said it was “happy to answer any questions”. Whatever shite is written in this thread, in reality there is no moral high ground. If you know the address, its fine. If you dont hav e the address and just the name then google's database of places is bigger and better but that really isnt a surprise and if you believe in Google's aggressiveness (which i do) then its easy to see how you end up with a poorer service than the monopolist.
