Beggers/choosers and all that ... but a guy who made money by selling novelty talking fish?

I really do hope there's more investors behind him.

You can imagine that the rest of the footballing world is just rubbing its hands in glee over the jokes they'll make about this.

And yet, can it be any worse that what we've got now ...

I doubt it.

Do you laugh or cry?

EDIT: More worryingly (and a Parkyesque theory) what if this is all a smokescreen and they play out a purchase yet really Ashley still has control of the club with Moat as a "geordie saviour" being the puppet?

so some clever thinking from the crew that were unable to realise ditching wise was the simple way to resolve the whole cock up in the first place ?

im not buying it.

A former estate agent who was born in Tynemouth, Moat is thought to have investment from American backers and is sufficiently far advanced in his dealings that if he decides to go ahead no competing consortium will be able to act in time to head him off. He was linked to a possible Newcastle takeover five years ago shortly before he left Premier Direct. Sources yesterday stressed that a Moat-led takeover is not a done deal, although he leads the field by some distance.

Possibly the only thing worse than a former "cockney" market stall holder. :panic:

Looking like we're either going to have Assley for another season - which would IFO result in relegation and/or administration.

Or a former estate agent potentially without enough money to run the club - which might be the better of the two options, but only because Assley is such a complete idiot.

Nothing will ever be worse than Ashley, NOTHING.

Would rather struggle with someone in charge who cares than this wanker.

It would be difficult to be worse than Assley admittedly, but remember he's done a vast amount of damage to the club from where he inherited it to where it is now, and that damage will continue to occur for at least the rest of this season even if he sells tomorrow. So even good owners may struggle, and so-so or bad owners may continue our downward trend.

And also remember most people (including Fop) though it would be hard to be worse than FFS and the Halls in their last few years.

Sadly it's the problem we face, we're too expensive for where we currently dwell so any of the decent bidders are put off. I guess a mediocre board is probably the best we can hope for then hope that if they manage to improve our situation and reduce our real costs they could look at getting in some heavy investment at a later date.

Fop,

I understand all of that, but contrary to what the media says, I am quite happy for a slow re-build if that's what it takes. Get a decent owner who cares, a genuine manager (shearer) who gets time in the job.

If all that is in place and my club gets it's dignity back, they will have not only my full support, but also my money.

The problem is even an excellent owner isn't always that positive if they don't have enough cash (Boro for example).

Admittedly a committed owner with no cash would hopefully get us stabilised in the Championship, but that's no guarantee of getting back into the Premiership never mind staying there.

Look at Sunderland, the only reason they've been able to go on their current spending spree is because of a big old cash injection.

Just far from convinced that the much vaunted "slow-rebuild" idea is any more guaranteed of success than getting back in to the top 8 was at this time last season.

is Moat mates with Shepherd?

Mates with Ashley apparently...

All the exec box crew are probably friendly with each other to some degree.

just had a thought that Moat was a front for Shepherd.

I'd still take that, I want Ashley out at any cost now - he's a cancer to the club that needs treatment before it gets terminal.

Agreed, I just want us to be normal. If that's mid table slow rebuild then so be it. I just want the stories to be back page of Ronnie not fucking front page Beano as we are now

BARRY DEAL SO REMOAT

Toon tycoon wants a box, not the club

Alan Oliver

Newcastle United have been left floundering in deeper water after tycoon Barry Moat's bid for the club proved to be a non-starter.

Leading Tyneside businessman Moat was seen at St James' Park on a couple of occasions during the week - but we can reveal it was only to sort out his hospitality box.

The Toon Army, who are desperate to see owner Mike Ashley find a buyer, had their hopes raised when we reported last Sunday that a Tyneside consortium was interested in taking over.

They were trying to find 20 businessmen prepared to cough up £5million each to meet the £100m asking price.

Those hopes were raised higher when Moat, who was chairman of the Alan Shearer testimonial committee and is a big pal and fan of the Geordie legend, was spotted at the ground this week.

A Newcastle source said last night: "Yes, Barry Moat has been to the ground this week on a couple of occasions and he has spoken to our managing director Derek Llambias and other people.

"Everyone has been getting excited about this and have put two and two together and come up with five as all Barry was doing was tying up the details of his own private hospitality box.

Anguish "Certainly as far as Newcastle United are concerned they do not consider Barry Moat to be a serious bidder." Former chairman Sir John Hall wants to bring a South African diamond billionaire to the table but, yet again, much to the anguish of the fans, things are proving slow to materialise.

Now Ashley, who has banked nearly £20m from the sales of Oba Martins, Habib Beye and Sebastien Bassong in the last nine days, is ready to accept a £20m down payment in his bid to sell the stricken club.

The Freddy Shepherd camp accept that the former chairman and his backers are the last people to whom Ashley would want to sell.

But they are hoping that it will be a case of the last man standing and they could yet succeed with their bid, which is below the £100m asking price.

Meanwhile, Ashley is on the lookout for an experienced manager to hold the reins while the search for a buyer continues.

Alan Curbishley, Gordon Strachan and even former Leeds and Aston Villa boss David O'Leary are believed to be under consideration for the post.

Moat was only sorting his executive box? Yeah, right. Pull the other one.

Being totally honest, I was never that overwhelmed by the prospect of this Moat chap taking over. Any port in a storm, and all that, but he/his bid just never enthused me.

Geordie hero Shearer back as boss of Newcastle 'within days'

By ROB DRAPER

Last updated at 5:53 PM on 09th August 2009

Alan Shearer could return as Newcastle manager as early as next week — but only if owner Mike Ashley is willing to accept a £70million offer for the club from Geordie businessman Barry Moat.

As Newcastle came from behind to draw 1-1 with West Bromwich yesterday on the opening day of the Championship season, Ashley, whose name was repeatedly abused by travelling fans, was flying in from Hawaii to finalise negotiations, with Keith Harris — who is conducting the potential sale — confident the deal can be completed within days.

Newcastle dropped Joey Barton to the bench after reports of an altercation with

temporary manager Chris Hughton and Moat is keen to get Shearer, who was at The Hawthorns yesterday as a BBC analyst, before the transfer window closes, so the club can buy players better suited to a promotion campaign.

Shearer said: ‘If someone comes in and buys the football club and wants me as manager and everything is right, and they want to get the club back up to the Premier League, then I would dearly love the chance to finish what I started last season. Other than that, you have to believe me when I say I don’t know anything.’

The decision will depend on Ashley’s attitude when he meets Seymour Pierce chairman Harris this week, who will present him the terms of Moat’s bid for the club.

But Ashley wants at least £90m and may yet decided to stay at the club for another year.

Shearer added: ‘I am still here, still in limbo. I don’t know any more than anyone else. But I want it sorted either way because of the love of the football club.’

I'm getting pissed off from both sides now. If ash wants 90 and moats offering 20, just find the fucking other 20 and be done.

For fucks sake , what's 20 mill to get your hands on this brilliant club.

It's really boiling my piss. I'm sure fat ass would even lend them it.

Moat, if your Reading this, stop docking around and get the fucking deal done.

Aye but isnt it a bit worry as to how he would fund the club in the transfer market if he is struggling to find th money for the buyout?

Or maybe it shows that he is a decent businessman and after looking at the books and reviewing the club he has decided that Ashley has set too high an asking price?

A decent businessman?? In charge of this club  is there such a thing ??? One can only hope this is the case, knowing this club I would go with the least appealing option as the truth, seems to work that way everytime!

Journalist on the radio tonight with connections to the NE. Reckons he spoke to Fat Fred a couple of weeks back who claims the club is worth £60m tops, £70m at a massive push and that everyone, including Ashley, is well aware of that fact.

Ashley evidently 'putting the club up for sale' at the request of the fans then taking it back down again at the end of the transfer window because no-one has shown a genuine interest.

He must think we were born yesterday man...
