This smacks of rummaging in the bargain bin to me.....

Noone would deny that, but a good deal is a good deal. 1m apparently.

Several of us mentioned that he would be a good pickup when someone posted a list of players on the final year of their contracts some time ago, so it's good that the club were of the same thinking.

Birmingham resigned to him leaving so are glad to be getting something for him.

he's never going to set the world alight but, if it keeps smith out the team by giving us options on the right (to me this smacks of Pardew recognising our goals are coming from carroll so get someone in who can ping a ball in) then I am all for it

I doubt his wages are excessive either, all in all, a decent bit of business

Definitely a good enough squad player with the capability to be a decent consistent performer. Offers more guile the Jonas and routledge so I'm all for it at a low price. As mentioned before, should keep shit like smith and guthrie out of the team.

Thoughts from Birmingham forums:

Overated no pace can't dribble could get to the byline on a bike let alone going passed the opposition. A few free kicks and a wonder goal dowant warrant 25 k a week. No competition from Blues for his shirt is a disgrace, bye Seb go and live up North East for your 25k too weak for the Premiership

Just our luck he goes up there and becomes top notch.

A bit of bitterness from the first poster, the second obviously knowing that he has the ability.

he has been a good player for us, he only cost 1 million and he has certainly earnt his wages as far as i am concerned.

good luck seb

Personally Larsson typifies why blues are boring to watch and thats why I think its best hes going.

He's a winger but how many times do you get off your bum when hes on the ball? Never is the answer. Hes to slow and other than his crossing which is exceptional, hes very average. Finally, Hleb, Beasujeur and bently (touch wood) look like an exciting bunch of wingers which blues have lacked for sooooo long.

Got to be said though, when on the pitch you could never question his commitment and work rate, so good luck seb'o.

Seb Larsson doesn't owe us a bean.

He has always given his lot and I hope he receives a great reception if or when he returns.

Good luck Seb !

I feel the exact same! Larsson has been a great servant to the club and ALWAYS puts a shift in and ALWAYS 100% committed. One of our better players in recent years...

Interesting. Sounds like he does put the effort in...

This put's the 1m pound figure into perspective

I think you might find that the sell on clause is for Arsenal to get % of any profit made from selling him on.

We signed him for £1m and sell him for £1m, hence no % due to Arsenal.

I'll be sad to see Seb leave. A good solid technical player, who did the jobs he was told too and didn't grumble when played in all sorts of postion. If Carr doesn't have someone in front of him who is willing to do more than their fair share of defending, we could be left with a little problem. I wish Seb all the best if he does go and thank him for his service. As M_B has already pointed out, with Bentley I think we will start to see the true value of Seb, because Bentley for me is very much in the same mould, except he has a bit more vision. KRO.

Madness! Newcastle will be getting an absolute bargain - an experienced Prem Player with proven fitness in his mid 20's for £1M!!! The money we get for him will only cover loan and agent fees for Bentley and at the end of season we will be a player down. It will probably cost £3M+ to replace him - remember Michel cost £2M and came nowhere near. I just hope Newcastle are paying him massive wages, and way beyond anything we were prepared to offer.

Hope our Board come up with an 11th hour mind changing offer, otherwise; Good luck Seb, thanks for the memories, especially Wigan away last year.

If the lad had pace he'd be some player.

Good delivery of the ball, hard working and a decent footballer. The downside would be the severe lack of goals, clearly believing he's better than what he is and he's very one footed.

yup. getting bentley would have showed more ambition if you ask me. this is typical ashley.

Personally I would rather have Larsson than Bentley, Larsson's always looked commited whenever I've seen him, unlike Bentley who seems to only play when it suits him. Of the two I'd think Larsson will fit in better with the players already at the club in terms of attitude too. I'm not defending Ashley's buying policies but I much prefer us actually making the effort to look for these sorts of bargains than paying over the odds for a trophy signing that can't be arsed to play without a massive paycheck.

Unfortunately as long as the fat cunts in charge we're not going to see a raft of multi milion pound players signed. We have to accept that and on that basis he would be a decent signing for the money. By the sounds of it he can certainly deliver a cross which given Caroll's strength in the air that's just what we need. And as others have said, anyone who keeps Smith and Guthrie (and Routledge after Saturdays debacle) is very welcome.

Well said. I think with Larsson we're more likely to get more consistent performances, and in general a player who's willing to do more grafting and hard work. Bentley on his day is good, there's no doubt about it, but as to how many of those days he has it's anyone's guess. it would take a lot more cash to get him here permanently, and he'd also be on a much higher wage. Without knowing the motivation of the players it's hard to say for sure, but I reckon Larsson would be much more keen to come to Newcastle from Birmingham than Bentley would be to leave London for Newcastle.

Iv always rated him and he will be a quality signing. Our attack would be VERY tasty indeed!

---Ben Arfa---Carroll---

---Jonas---Tiote---Barton---Larsson---

Strength, Ariel ability, power, pace and trickery from our front two, and pace, grit, guile and technical ability from midfield.

Seriously Seriously strong attacking side.

If we can bring in another LM at end of the season to offer something different other than Jonas on the left, or another striker allowing Ben Arfa to play down the left then we really will have a quality team...or the foundations to a quality team.

Jonas looks like the weak link in that attacking 6.

Well yeah he is. I like him and his energy and ability to run with the ball, it relieves the pressure on defence. Once again tho his final ball is letting him down and is in serious danger of losing his place.

If an offer of around 5-6mil came in now or at end of season is let him go. Him and Colo.

NEWCASTLE United's bid to sign Birmingham City midfielder Sebastian Larsson could be scuppered by his wage demands – as Sunderland wait in the wings.

The Magpies were yesterday given permission to talk to the Swedish player as Alan Pardew looks to strengthen his squad this month.

But ahead of this Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby, bitter rivals Sunderland are keeping a watching brief on the situation.

Steve Bruce originally signed Larsson for the Blues in 2007, and remains an admirer of the right-winger.

And the Black Cats are not convinced the Swedish international will move in the January transfer window as the 25-year-old looks for a new big-money deal.

Larsson is believed to be on £10,000 a week at Birmingham, and is looking for at least double that, but with owner Mike Ashley insisting that the days of big salaries at St James's Park are over, Newcastle could be priced out of a move for the player.

And with Birmingham also wanting a £1m transfer fee if the player leaves in the January transfer window, it means he will not be a cheap acquistion.

Sunderland would still be interested in a player who, as a deadball specialist, would bring something extra to Steve Bruce's squad.

The Scandinavian's delivery from corners and free-kicks would certainly add more goals, and if the player chooses to see out his contract and leave in the summer on a free transfer, Sunderland would be among the interested parties.

Larsson could still leave St Andrews this month though if the right offer is made, and City boss Alex McLeish has confirmed that the player will be allowed to talk to Alan Pardew.

But he has not given up hope of the player staying and accepting a new deal, though he accepts that is something out of his hands.

He said: "The latest with Seb is we gave his advisor permission to speak to Newcastle. Other than that, I've heard nothing.

"I know Seb would like to stay. But we'll just have to wait and see, we've hit an impasse at the moment."

However, the fact that Birmingham have swooped for David Bentley seems to show they aren't confident of holding on to Larsson this transfer window.

Tottenham and England man Bentley – who Pardew also targeted as someone he was interested in bringing to St James's Park – is set to join on loan until the end of the season.

McLeish added: "It will be good to sign him because he has got a bit of quality and class as a footballer. His delivery at set-pieces is excellent as well. He is a natural footballer."

Sunderland, meanwhile, will continue their pursuit of Paris St Germain's Stephane Sessegnon and Inter Milan's Sulley Muntari.
