Bernard tips Cabaye to be a hit with Magpies

OLIVIER BERNARD today gave his fellow countryman and Newcastle United new boy Yohan Cabaye a warm welcome to Tyneside – and then backed him to be a hit with the Toon Army.

Cabaye was set to sign for the Magpies today from French champions Lille in a 4.8m deal and will become Alan Pardew’s first summer signing.

The midfielder – a full France international – will bolster United’s midfield options and sets up an intriguing battle in the engine room next season with Dan Gosling also back to full fitness and raring to go.

Former Newcastle United star Bernard knows all about Cabaye and is still a keen observer of the French game, despite living on Tyneside these days and working for the Show Racism The Red Card organisation.

Bernard told the Chronicle: “I’ve seen Cabaye play a few times, and I think he’s almost the complete midfield player.

“He’ll do a fantastic job. He’s a tidy player, and a very neat passer of the ball.

“He rarely loses the ball, and he’s great going forward. He’s a box-to-box player, similar to Kieron Dyer when he came to Newcastle.

“He’ll organise the side, and would be a very important player for Newcastle.”

Bernard also played down suggestions that Cabaye is a defensive midfielder and that he could clash with Cheick Tiote – a player who Bernard knows well after working with him as his translator earlier in the season.

Bernard says: “He’s nothing like Cheick. I think they would complement each other.

“Cheick’s very good defensively, but Cabaye plays more the Xavi role at the front of the midfield. He can switch the ball left to right. He’s a very clever player.

“I definitely think he will boss the midfield and get the attacks going, and with Ben Arfa in the team, things are looking good for Newcastle.”

United boss Pardew will now focus on other targets – including Charles N’Zogbia.

It will be announced at 5pm apparently but I think it the usual photo on the website rather than an actual press conference.

Anyone see the Pardew interview when they asked him about why he gets pushed out on his todd to do these things and he replied its cos Dekka is ugly.

Great to.finally be confirmed.

Push on now and get a few more of this or better quality.

Totally agree. Lets hope Mr Carr has several more lined up ready to come in. (And the outgoings are minimal).

Im sure Leazes will be along in a minute to welcome such a positive signing.

Class signing. The calibre of player we need.

A good start but there's still a long way to go and I'm nervous about us bringing in the wrong men and letting the right ones go.

You honestly need help.

You trust our lot not to find some way of fucking things up?

Yup, I think they are really trying to put us on the right path. Sure we may lose some, I'll be gutted if / when Barton goes (but he's brought that on himself), less gutted if Nolan goes and already resigned to Enrique going.

Cant really see anything after that unless a ridiculous bid came in for Tiote.

Its early days, but so far Cabaye is a great but, particularly for the price. Like most I havent seen a lot of him but his movement and passing look very good and just what we need to compliment Tiote.

I will however feel happier when we have completed on at the very least one very good striker. As this was our number one priority I would like to believe that Mr Carr has a few irons in the fire.

Still 80 odd days to go. :icon_lol:
