At least if they split from the Union it'll be measures from people who actually represent them. If Scotland had left 2014 (before the oil crash), they'd be on their knees now and in much worse austerity than before. Their plan for independence was based on a high oil price. Going alone now could only be done with massive cuts due to the shortfall in cash. Politically they've been able to blame austerity so far on Downing Street. Their popularity would diminish if it was wee cranky imposing cuts that would make Osbourne wince. This is why she gave a very ifs and buts statement today. Mr Obama has insisted the UK and Washington will “indispensable partners" following Britain’s decision to sever ties with Brussels. It comes after a bout of scaremongering by the US president when he warned Britain would be “at the back of the queue” for a trade deal in the event of a British exodus from the 28-nation bloc. But the US leader appeared to go back on his word today when he said both the UK and European Union would remain "indispensable partners". Could the manage financially without having to implement a horrific austerity program? Would they join the Euro? IF contagion continues to grow in Europe, is it worth them risking it all? I personally think EU is finished in current format and will have to change quite dramatically to stave off contagion. And yes I think they will come around to a free trading agreement with us. Basically not pressing the button on article 50 today allows for tempers to cool, secret talks to start and avoid a manic willy waving contest. I hope you're right but the most obvious way for the EU to stop contagion is punitive measures on us. We can retaliate, but as the EU bloc is nearly a magnitude bigger than us, I can guess who will come off worst. I understand that position but the big players in the EU each have their own euroskeptics problems as well as their own industries to keep on side with elections coming up. Merkel is in the "let's take time over this" camp, so that's probably what will happen. Anyway, I don't think they get to boot us out any quicker - surely the 2 year thing is there to protect both parties. I think they just want to enforce us doing this Article 50 trigger sooner, which I can understand as we've made the decision so shouldn't be allowed to delay that just cos we fancy it. I think there's a difference of tone between EU officials and sovereign countries. EU officials are willy waving where as officials from Germany / Poland are talking about new treaty's, EU reform and giving us association status. Honestly, I'm fairly certain that our relationship with Europe over the coming weeks will get stronger and stronger leading to a deal within 12 months.
