I think Isak's agent is probably foaming that NUFC have called his bluff. Even more so given that Isak is his golden goose, isn't he? If he spends a period of time in the wilderness, the agent is a bit fucked.

From a financial POV we're definitely cutting our nose off. But for once we're standing up and telling the footballing world that we're not being bullied into anything. If Liverpool had come along with a sensible offer then we could be accused of being unreasonable but as it stands they've tapped up the player and then tried to lowball us. I was listening to Martin O'Neill yesterday talking about how Liverpool did the exact same thing with Gareth Barry. They used Steven Gerrard to tap him up and then came in with an £8m bid to which Villa said they wanted £10m. Liverpool then walked away because they couldn't get him on the cheap. The player was gutted, mostly because Liverpool had let him down but he played the season and then went to Man City for £12m the following summer and filled his trophy cabinet. Liverpool are fucking snakes in all this so I would sell but 100% not to those cunts unless they pay full whack.

This latest "leak" works in our favour. The tv and radio pundits are starting to turn on Isak, and it's a simple case of contract law now. His agent has been stupid enough to publicly announce through Ornstein that Isak is going to refuse to play for the club. That leaves NUFC open to seek legal recourse to either withhold his wages or sue him for his transfer valuation surely?

Unsettled Isak to a point where I think 99% believe he won't be here for 26/27 and given our stance it's highly unlikely he'll be sold to another PL club. Whilst they've not materially improved their squad with his addition, they've significantly weakened our position and threat to them.

I don't think we are. This is an almost existential issue for our credibility and future at this point. We have to maintain the truth that no player is bigger than the club. The consequences of the counterfactual are much worse in the long run.

But do we really want to entertain a repeat of the nonsense that's gone on the last 3-4 weeks consuming a transfer window? It's less about the individual and more about the downstream impact on the club that takes precedence for me.

All this jabbering about this putting off players from joining us (Thiaw must have missed that memo) but how many players would join a team that sells its single CF option with no back up simply because another club demands it? We have to remain competitive in order to convince players to join, beyond all other concerns. I think Andrew's timeline for the next 12 months is pretty spot on and an outcome I'd be very happy with. Expecting players to hold up their side of a contract? How terrible of us. The only scenario in which a player will want to improve his contract will be when his value has increased because of being at the club. And that demands at least enough integrity from the player that they don't shit the bed in a potential breakthrough year.

 

More generally, I don't see Isak, paid literally  millions for kicking a plastic ball, getting much sympathy from the court of public opinion

Most probably already believed that he wouldn't be here for 26/27 as two years remaining on original contract is often where you cash is for the best value. It was this year that I was always bullish about him remaining as why would you sell such an important player with 3 years on their contract.

As if most players would know this level of operations of other clubs. Their agents will feed them whatever bullshit gets them (the agent) the best outcome and that will pretty much exclusively be finance driven. In addition we've done nothing wrong, we signed a player and expect them to honour their contract just as a player who signed would expect the club to honour the contract.
