Sounds fair though - wait until end of season for CL assurances. Hard to argue with it for a player of his level and in fairness, maybe we have to accept that if we can't manage that this year we need to move some players on to release the pressure on the team to succeed and buy in the next generation to take us forward. Would imagine we might lose Tonali in that circumstance also.

 

I don't think we should give up on the CL spots yet anyway, the whole league is misfiring.

I think waiting until the summer makes sense for all parties tbh, he still has two years left at that point so we retain a level of control, unless he pulls a rat, which is unlikely I would think.

 

Also Pep’s away end of next season (in 27) who can say what things look like next summer, will help massively if we’re back in CL obviously.

 

That said, I’d love to keep him long term but whilst his defensive work is excellent his attacking delivery isn’t great (was better when he was on the left strangely) and his  peak is yet to come.

Losing Tino would be a massive blow. His recent absence has just proved that, he's probably the most mobile player on the team, links everything together and provides a constant outlet, always looking for the ball. 

 

I think we'll just have to get used to this sort of thing though, the club has to put a structure in place where a quality replacement is ready to come in and the team gets on with it. At the very least you can get another silly fee of City and use it improve the squad long term. If and when we're able to be at a level close to the likes of City retaining this sort of talent will get easier but even then you'll have the likes of Real and Barca breathing down the neck for truly outstanding players. 

 

I just hope we haven't got any more seriously filthy reeking rats hiding in the squad.

I don't think he'll go in Jan, hes in a really competitive spot for england fullbacks for the world cup and hes a dead cert to play every game for us that he can while also looking like (and being) one of the best in the team. Tuchel has been brutal on dropping people if they aren't playing/performing so a high profile move is risky in Jan.

 

He could go in summer but we'll want/get top dollar for him and then he'll be off to somewhere that will double or triple his wages and be competing for titles and in europe every year. Can't argue with that from our current position.

Spot on.

 

The frustrating thing is we aren't far off being a top team. I wouldn't trade Tino, Hall, Bruno or Tonali for any other player in the Premier league in their respective positions. Thiaw, Botman, Gordon and Woltemade not far off in that regard when they are at their best. 

 

FFP has meant gradual growth so we're needing to find a gem or two each season to progress. 

 

I'm sometimes guilty of expecting continous progression but it's not going to be a linear line to the top. 

 

To have 4 players who'd start for any team in the league is a far cry from watching Gullit, Souness, Allardickhead & Bruce sides. Even as recent as May 2021, Joe Willock was our most attacking threat and Saint Maxi was the only player to get my arse off the seat in a Newcastle shirt.

I expect Tino to leave in the summer. CL or not for us doesn't hold much relevance, I fear. City can offer basically permanent CL football and greatly improved wages. And the wages matter way way more. Players aren't sentimentalists about this stuff, rarely ever have been, and especially aren't now with agents in their ears making sure that human emotions don't come into it. And who can blame them?

 

This will continue to happen. We can't offer the wage so we can't compete. This part of football history will be remembered as the beginning of a truly protectionist era, as a response by the established giants to the rise of City and PSG. I also don't see how it ever ends. Not that I have any insight. Anyway, in our lifetime, sport has evolved out of the end of amateurism and local loyalties (at least in a lot of disciplines) to become utterly enmeshed with geopolitics and international business. And that sort of trend doesn't seem to show any signs of reversing.

 

Football is a closed shop. NUFC may manage to overcome it in time but only because we're owned by one of the only entities in the entire world with the financial and political muscle to push its way into the conversation. And we may well do so eventually for reasons that have nothing at all to do with football because there are a lot of people in the world who want to do business with Saudi Arabia. It's all very icky stuff really.

 

I guess we're all complicit so long as we're paying attention. But, hey, I'm a moron and a hypocrite so expect something more than nothing at all from me at your peril.
