Kirkstone pass Inn is a nice stop off on that route on a summers day. IF you ever wanted to do some hill walking it's also a great starting point (from the bus) as you're already 1500 feet up. Can walk over to Patterdale via High Street or Patterdale or Ambleside or Grasmere via Fairfield. Doesn't help me much though as it's always descent that fucks my knees and hips.

High Street is great.

I once did a MTB ride from Staveley up there, then drop down to Haweswater and then back via Gatescarth. Mega day out

High Street is so called because it’s the route of a Roman road, the track of which can still be followed. Although I think all of what was the original road itself has eroded away. High Street the summit is the highest point on the ridge which the road ran/runs along. But the summit of High Street is not on the road, the route of the road itself follows a path a bit lower down, about 10 yards lower. Fascinating, eh? Also the best way to it is up The Rigg (ridge) from Haweswater. On the road there that runs  along the other side of the lake you can stop off and scream, at the top of your voice “I’m going to be a star”

And the only golden Eagle left in England can sometimes be seen from the Haweswater side. AND. I once met Chris Bonnibgton on High Street. :D I was too shy/aloof to asky for a selfie though.

I thought the last one died. I saw Chris Bonnington driving the other way (pretty sure it was him as he pulled into a passing place) near Ullswater about 3 years ago

Is that in response to the Snowdon Shitters or the Boldon Bedwetter…

… or both?

Both. Although it’s harmless fun in CT’s case. The lack of respect of those who’ve ‘discovered the great outdoors’ during covid is canny annoying to say the least though
