  1. Does seem apt. If we were so wonderful, why did all the colonies want independence? As for taught history, I find the number of people who are completely ignorant about Ireland absolutely staggering. And therefore don't understand the Brexit issues. Remember Karen Bradley who just had no clue on the sectarian nature of NI? But I can't remember being taught anything about it either, you have to proactively look this stuff up yourself.
  2. Aye. I think it demonstrated the power of the press in a frightening way. Also think people are forgetting how bad it was, it was fucking mental.
  3. It was somewhat shocking, but the reaction was not normal for most countries. There was hysteria, very reminiscent of Eva Peron in Argentina. Is there anybody in countries like France, Germany the US (excepting Trump, US probably not a good example anyway as they are also nuts) who would trigger such a reaction? IMO there's something weird about the psyche of this country. Obsessed with royalty, old wars, empire. I try to understand the people wailing cos the queen died, but I really struggle. Diana was the same.
  4. There's nothing on there to stop me running in my planned outfit, thank God.
  5. It is a bizarre argument. It's clear to me now we don't live in a free democracy now. We are neither free or democratic. And it's getting to the stage I can't say this in public.
  6. Oh fuck, somebody better delete this entire thread now!
  7. Aye, what would happen if King Charles offed someone?
  8. What can I say, as unfashionable as it is, I liked his music as a kid and was sad when he died. Especially as it was from AIDS so his life was cut short. Politics didn't come into it (Queen not boycotting South Africa is even more egregious I think). Was also upset as a young kid when Lennon died, I still get upset thinking about that tragic waste.
  9. Yeah, Bobby Robson, Freddie Mercury and David Bowie for me. Felt sad, even she'd a tear for Bowie (probably the onset of a midlife crisis tbh), then just got on with it. It is very odd, but it is ingrained. Diana was just as bad.
  10. Is he still based in Playa del Ingles? @Monkeys Fist, I wholly recommend the first 30 seconds of this.
  11. Thr Sun I think, mayb NotW. The context here he was cheating on Di, the people's princess. They were on her side and had a hate campaign against Charles. Of course phone tapping is disgusting, and was revealed for what it was in the Millie Dowler case. The press really are scum, yet they have a huge impact on our country.
  12. Constitutionally you're a subject. See, this is another thing, people argue that she is just a figure head. Fair enough. Then why the fuck are we going on like this? Did anyone act like this even when their own grandparent died. I find it bizarre.
  13. Of course both him and Camilla were married to other people at the time. Nice moral behaviour.
  14. You're young. His phone was tapped by the press, was a big scandal at the time, conveniently airbrushed out of history.
  15. Just reminded there by Charles that he only represents the protestant religion. Btw, who remembers when our King said this?
  16. "History being made". I don't deny it. The problem with this country though, unlike nearly all others, is we choose to live in history,, rather than acknowledge it and letting it flow over us. Nostalgic fantasy is literally destroying this nation.
  17. No, I believe its the direct capital cost of paying for the pageantry and changing currency, stamps etc. Not sure if productivity losses are factored in, but if they are, that's still relevant. The financial argument for the Royal Family us pure bullshit, ethically and economically.
  18. Really. More than the estimated £6,000,000,000 its estimated to cost (count the 0s). Be a royalist if you want, but don't tell me it's about foreign tourism money when Brexit has helped kill that industry.
  19. More than the 6 billion the changeover will cost?
  20. One of my mates says he is driving to Edinburgh today to be near the body. Asked me on WhatsApp if I wanted a lift to join him. I remember having arguments about the monarchy with him the past, and he is a royalist, but I can't tell I he is being serious about this and dare not ask now. Just haven't answered the message.
  21. To my dying day, I will never understand why people are happy to subjects rather than citizens, and being reigned over like we are fucking corgis. Its so fundamentally wrong in this day and age. Was thinking this morning what a sham our democracy is. In one week we have changed prime minister and head of state, and the people have had no say in this whatsoever. We don't even live in a nominal democracy.
  22. Jerusalem is melodically much superior but is pure religious gibberish lyrically isn’t it? Jesus visiting England? Mormon levels of bollocks. Make it England's anthem maybe, I don't care, I've given up on this country for the time being. I will never sing God Save the King.
  23. I only listened to the boring jug eared twat in the hope he'd announce we're getting that Monday off. I reckon it'll be on Sunday and we'll get a day off for the coronation, some time in Spring or is it more immediate?
