They used to have one (of sorts). RAF Usworth became Sunderland Airport in the 60s but closed 20 years later. It's now the Nissan factory.

My old man told me that when he was a kid, a fighter plane (Hurricane I think), came back shot to bits and tried to make it to the airfield but fell just short.

Rather than hit any houses, he brought it down on a road between the terraced houses, but died in the crash.

He remembered the bullets exploding in the burning fuselage and the local copper scooting them away behind the houses.

We looked it up and found a record of it, the pilot was a 25yr old Canadian lad.

Got this sent to me from a mackem hating Leeds fan I’m mates with. Seems there’s trouble in marradise…..the cunts probably haven’t seen it as are too busy dribbling over their countless Isak threads on groomers 239e14b0-9b78-4114-ac6c-de61da011eca.thumb.jpeg.fcf006dafe8f49d99f8f08800b631c1f.jpeg

Has he not just signed for them permanently in this window?

He has... that's a fucking weird one. Though they're not without form on that front. They signed that lad in the short era who was £10m or something and then tried to back out of it, got taken to court, and eventually had to pay the money... all without actually getting the player.

They had an obligation to buy him if they got promoted last season

Obviously weren't expecting that to come through.

Let's hope we get our shit together sharpish as it would just be their luck to get us in a transition season when they've fluked promotion.

I read this the other day and think it’s a fantastic gesture - more clubs should take note.

I don't get that as a gesture at all. Why 85? Why this threshold? Is there something that happens  at 85 that makes tou poorer? NO? Cynically because that is an exceptionally small cohort and it gives them good PR? Maybe.

I'm in two minds - it looks good but I'd be surprised if it applied to more than 20 people. Not sure whether that negates it necessarily but it's them lot so my ultra-cynicism has gone hyper.

If we'd done this and the RTG response was "not shewa about this like marra", we'd have something to say about it.

If you're 85 in the NE, chances are you're getting by on not much more than a state pension. I don't think you suddenly get poorer at 85, but they can't offer it to all pensioners so they've picked an age to have a cutoff where you no longer have to pay.

There's not a lot wrong with that.

First, it's just a shrug. I honestly don't care either way. Now, maybe it's different at Sunderland for two reasons, firstly they have spare capacity so an older person could use this to get a free ticket they couldn't otherwise afford, and the club couldn't sell, and secondly, maybe pensioners are poorer in Sunderland.

But thinking of NUFC, there is no space to sell any STs let alone give them away for free. But secondly, I can almost guarantee the average 85 years old at SJP will be well minted with state AND private pensions as they eat their short cake in the expensive East stand. Most will have far, far more disposable income than a mortgage and family slave like me.

Its like WFA. It honestly doesn't make sense. When I was in the Lakes, I was paying £12 each time I took a bus with the family, £24 return. Pensioners rock up on the bus for free. They clearly were monied. Round here, the cafes and restaurants are rammed with pensioners, something they do daily which is a treat for families. And it's these type of pensioners that will go to the match imo.

So frankly I don't give a shit what the mackems think. I still think it's an odd priority.

Speaking as someone who was a mortgage and family slave for 45 years can I just say:

Aww Pity GIF by MOODMAN

P.S. I only attend the OCBC (old cunts breakfast club) in the coastal cafés on a Thursday.
