The were referred to as mackems plenty enough before 1992 if that's what you're referring to? If you mean self referral then you're not far wrong. A few of the older ones might not have been too keen on that nickname as it was definitely a slur, particularly for those on both sides who worked in the yards. Yes, we've been through this before, it was used down your neck of the wood in Swans, but not much outside of that I don't think personally. Then John Hall (who strangely was an MLF according to them) said something about a Geordie nation, and they collectively pissed themselves and clung on to the only term that existed that differentiated them from us, an insult invented by us.
