Several words describe this signing; Unbelievable, Brilliant, Ambitious, Surprising, Suspicious.

Unbelievable: This kid is a genuine wonderkid of European football. He has been dubbed the new Maldini and could genuinely step into any Serie A club he wished, including most European giants.

Brilliant: We obviously need a left back so to replace the wantaway Enrique with a player with the potential to be better than him, for a lesser fee, is truly incredible. He can also play at right back so Simpson better start upping his game because Raylor is on fire.

Ambitious: This signing sends a message loud and clear to European football; NUFC are still a big club. Any future signings will look twice at NUFC as a genuine possibility to play their football just by looking at this signing as well as Ben Arfa and Cabaye. Signing a 20-year-old wonderkid is nothing but ambitious and very impressive for all the NUFC fans to lick their lips over.

Surprising: As I have already said, this kid could genuinely make it in any team he wanted in his native Italy, he is this highly praised. 'New Maldini' is a tag given to him by the highest of pedigree such as Jose Mourinho and Marcelo Lippi, which is high praise indeed. Also given the fact 99% of Italians usually stay 'home' within the Serie A and if they were to leave it would only be to a European Giant like Man Utd, Barcelona or a Bayern Munich, the fact NUFC have pulled this off is very surprising to say the least.

Suspicious: Not to put a downer on this but you have to ask the question 'Why?' has a young Italian 'wonderkid' decided to leave one of Italy's giants to come to NUFC. The obvious answer must be; The Premier League. Our league is genuinely the biggest in Europe and can draw the best of players to it. Another answer must be 'Wages'. You can assume we have gave this lad the maximum we can in regards to wages which is widely accepted as £50k a week. So for a 20 year old lad to get this for 5 years is an obvious pulling tool.

It's worth noting that if this kid is to fulfil his potential then their is a threat he will outgrow our football club if we continue to be a mid-table side. So he could be using NUFC as a stepping stone in his career for a bigger move later on in his career. It is known that he was dropped from the team at Inter and has been criticised in certain games so he may need this fresh new challenge to resurrect his career. To be honest, even if he is just using NUFC as a stepping stone....I am not complaining! If he matches his potential in a Black n White shirt (that isnt Juventus) I am more than happy. Bring it on.

It's also worth noting that NUFC have 'invested' in this boy. They know full well given his age, reputation and the transfer fee, that if he does leave us one day.....he will leave for a hell of a lot more than £5million!

I am glad we have finally got a full back in and the fact it is Davide Santon who all Football Manager players know is something very special indeed, I am surprised but over the moon!

Finally a signing that matches the 'policy' NUFC insist on feeding us. Now, a striker needed please!! You have 24 hours!

You and Deano will get on well.

This is a fantabulous signing by the club.:D Now they should just splash the cash on a young striker on the heels of this capture (which they won't). If they did that, we're talking about ambitions for the club that were a pipe dream just a few years ago.

so good, nobody else seemed to be bothered about going for him. I dont doubt hes a good player but theres been injuries and other problems which seem to have given a warning to other clubs.

As Ant says, hes a Right Back who has filled in at Left Back, lets not rewrite history now.

I swear FM has a lot to make up for

Just to make it clear, this has the potential to be a very good signing. But wonderkid? clear intention to the world? major force in football? fuck off man.

Now official.

Is he predominantly a left-back as it says?

No but if your a club who can't sign a left back that's what you'll say, esp when you've just sold a decent one

He made his name and has played predominantly at left back over his career.

We can add him to the "left winger and completely right footed Jonas" list who only plays on the left for us, nevermind never playing their for his previous club or the argies (bar once in a blue moon when he's not on the right as a wingback under crazy diego)

How odd Jonas turned into a left winger when we flogged duff and needed one.

I'm willing to lay odds on me having seen him play an awful lot more than you, he really didn't but think what you like I really can't be arsed getting into this argument.

I won't reply to it again if you think he's a left back fair enough lap it up (that goes for the rest on here who have watched a youtube clip and have decided oh aye he's a leftback alright)

If/when he gets caught out for being completely right sided or isn't putting in crosses earlier enough because he's constantly switching back to the right foot please no one come on here whinging about not having a left back.

Fucking hell, calm down dear  He broke into the Inter side under Mourinho ahead of Chivu (the period in which I saw most of him) and the got furnished with the new Maldini tag because like him he was a right footed defender playing on the left.

I swear some people have forgotten what it's like to be positive on here.

Come on, everything else out the window, this is a brilliant signing, if he gets his head together and the skys the limit. Come on, I know there's a lot of bullshit happening around the club but there's no need to be constantly pissed off about everything. We're in a better position here than we were when we signed Enrique. Maybe his potential won't carry through, but there's a massive chance we're staring at a signing of the season.

Some pretty negative comments on here. Surely a great signing?

None of the big clubs wanted him so he must be shit. Just like Tiote.

It's not as if we're signing Ryan Taylor to play at LB. I'm chuffed at this.

Fantastic signing! Credit where credit is due lads. Santon is a real wonderkid prospect and to get him here for 5mil on a 5 year contract is, no matter which way you paint the picture...ambition.

I have a sneaky feeling we mite yet see a big bid for a striker thmora. Back this up Mike and go fuckin get Sturridge as well! I'd fuckin love it if FMA went crazy and got Cissokho as well! :D

Linked with Dempsey and Cisse today...both would be good signings.

Interesting statement. Not upfront we're not, although Nicky Butt and Alan Smith were the mainstays of our midfield that season.

Sorry, not going to happen. Don't get your hopes up about getting anyone better than Federico fucking Macheda.

My Inter fan friend suggest he was given many opportunities to take the LB spot and never really established himself and Inter finally gave up on him after 5 coaches tried to get him to work there. Hope he's just being pessimistic/critical.

Edit: based on my readings here, I'm cautiously optimistic. Further so by the history of Enrique starting slowly and coming into his own and the fact that many of our recent signings have actually been reasonably shrewd IMO.

thats the only time Ive heard it put that way, more that different coaches tried to use him differently which is hardly his fault

Think everyone on here is just following the fm hype around him.

hardly, hes earned that title of the next maldini playing under mourinho, lost his way with injuries and constant manager changes since but the lad is a quality player.

its not like hes sprung from obscurity I know a few posters, myself included, do watch italian football a fair bit.

the boys good, simple as that.

Well this is a signing that has polarised opinions on here.... ;-)

This lad could be a fantastic player but he hasnt kicked a ball for us yet so i'm still firmly in the wait and see catergory.

Lets hope this kid fulfills his potential but I'm not gonna get excited yet.

im definitely in the wait and see category, adapting to the prem from serie a can be tough but Ive seen him play a bit and hes unquestionably really talented.

im on the positive side of wait and see.
