Had an erm interesting 48 hours.

I’ve been plagued with lower back problems due to a suspected herniated disc for decades but had a flare up this weekend which was next level. A session of physio yesterday put my back in constant agonising involuntary contractions and left me screaming like a baby, freaking out the wife and kids.

leaving hospital now with a prescription of Valium, codeine and anal suppositories. Next steps are an MRI scan to get to the bottom of it and assess whether I need any intervention such as a steroid injection or surgery.

How’s your Sunday going?

Why on earth would you put off getting it checked for decades?

I have a herniated disc in my neck and amytriptolene sorting me out no bother. Got offered an op but was told if it went wrong I could end up being paralysed from the neck down. Passed on that.

Glad you got it sorted CT, but if the risk of an op was being paralysed from the neck up instead of down I think you should've took the risk tbh.

when it was first assessed a few years back the doctor said I didn’t need an MRI as it was certainly a herniated disc and could be treated with painkillers and physio, which is what I did.

That worked for long periods. I was able to manage it aside from the occasional minor flare up. Nothing as severe as what happened this weekend though. I probably should have been offered an MRI in the first place to properly assess the issue but that’s the NHS for you. Money is so right they don’t want to spend it if they can avoid it

Well aware of this level of pain and the cocktail of drugs you've been prescribed. I suffer with sacroiliac joint dysfunction which, when inflamed, is on a pain level that's excruciating to the point where you can lose control of bodily functions.

Been told mine is chronic and controlled only by medication and physio when it flares up (once every 3/4 years on average) and usually takes 2-3 weeks to calm down. The rest of the time I'm perfectly normal!

More than one physio has recommended doing pilates on a regular basis to combat onset - never booked myself in for a session though.

You can do pilates at home following a beginners class on YouTube. I had physio a while back and the physio lass recommended this channel:

... And who wouldn't want to "move with Nicole"?! 😳

Update: contractions eased yesterday but back is still in spasm, my tummy muscles are almost at a right angle and I’m walking like a cripple. Can’t get comfortable sitting or waking. Lying down on the floor provides some relief but then I seize up when I get back up again. Feels like one that’ll take weeks rather than days to clear up.

Shit Gloomy sounds nasty, can you not get one of the royal chiropractors to sort you out or get Camilla to walk up your back in her heels (again)

I've got the same issue. I suspect it may be my sacroiliac joint giving me grief. NSAIDS are the only thing that help.

I'd have to be in the verge of being wheelchair bound before I had back surgery. Never met anyone who didn't regret it!

Ruined by London life tbh.

We’re all as soft as shite down here.

As it happens, my back is fucked too, as a result of attempting to do some manual work a few weeks ago, so I need to see a specialist. I’m remaining stoic though not like that soft cunt Gloomy.

I'm laughing, and CT is, at him using the word tummy instead of stomach, gut, belly etc rather than him getting a bad back.

Can only echo this: avoid spinal surgery at all costs. Take all the drugs and start gentle Pilates when able. Hope it eases soon, Gloomy.

Tell you what, in a world of oversharing, post prostate biopsy, when they go through the perineum, there is nothing more horrific than blasting out dead blood when you are trying to make the wife a plaster's radio! Definite mood killer..

It takes a lot to make me cackle out loud after 30 years in nursing but that worked   Please don’t tell your wife whom I have met and adore.

And everything I have already wished

you in messages remains. Everything crossed for your next results. (except your legs)

Thoroughly recommend Pilates, although I should have taken it up 20 years ago or more, when actually had some movement in my body.  Luckily managed to find a class for oldies. :)

Failed back surgery syndrome is a real thing. I do know a lad who had back surgery this year though and it helped immensely. Does seem a roll of the dice.
