the greatest goalkeeping display i personally think ive ever witnessed was by alex williams for man city back in october 1983.

we beat them 5-0 and he was fucking magnificent. comfortably would've hit them for double figures without him.

4 or 5 excellent saves yesterday.

Totally agree about him being shocking with his feet, but I think he was under instruction to get the ball out very fast yesterday as that’s not usually his thing.

Got to assume EH thinks his shot stopping outweighs his distribution.

Dubravka is also a good shot stopper and better with his feet tbf. In hindsight we should have kept him and arranged an earlier swap deal with Burnley for Pope

Thing is every single time the ball is played to him I expect an error and some wild kick is the best we can hope for.

I agree he's an excellent old style keeper and I'm not demanding an Ederson but there needs to be some nod to the game changing so much. Maybe Ramsdale is that answer.

Is that different from what I said?

Dubravka isn’t in the same league as Pope with regards to shot stopping.

Thanks for the mention but I think the 22 year-old me was in the middle of getting stitched up for the sack in Thetford at the time, phew!!

Why do people keep bringing up Dubravka ffs. He deputized for the injured Pope didnt he a couple of years ago and he was absolute dog shit, couldn't save anything thrown straight at him and we dropped a ton of points as a result of it. He does look good on his day and of course he's had some good games for us but that run eroded any confidence I had in him and probably Howe's too.

I'm on the Ramsdale bandwagon. I don't know if he's as good as shot stopper as Pope but I doubt the differential would be anywhere near that of their ability with feet. Give him a chance.

i was only 18, i did have a season ticket that season and i do remember alex williams, but no way i could recall any specific games. and i would probably forget that one pretty quickly.

funny how some people remember the details of things from that far back. my memory doesn't work that way sadly.

i do remember 5 goals from this weekend though. welll worth the drive back to manchester.

I would say elite was slightly embellishing it mind. i dont think any of the saves were ones most keepers would fail to save.

I thought for the 1st goal he failed to move at all other than the theatrical attempt to claw it back after it had already gone in off the post. ive actually watched it a few times again this morning and I think the angle the header comes from he could've blocked it just by moving forward.

2nd goal he was nowhere near the ball in his 6 yard box.

This is nonsense. He needs to cover the whole goal as there's no telling what happens from the cross. The only way he can save that is if he is standing next to the far post leaving the rest of the goal open. The ball from Merino's head starts wide of the goals and swings back in off the post.

And the second goal it's embarrassing our defending. Saliba fakes going to the back post where Tonali is loosely positioned but instead goes and stands in front of Pope who has zero protection from anyone. From here Saliba can easily and legally prevent Pope from getting to the ball. Burn is marking Gabriel but loses him when he makes a jinking run. Lascelles is marking noone and is flat on his heels when the ball comes in. If he is either in line with the front post or protecting Pope by clearing out Saliba this goal doesn't get scored. Ultimately someone should have been marking Saliba for obvious reasons and he doesn't get to block Pope. It's a big defensive failing and not Pope's fault, except that he and others need to be communicating better about who is marking who.

I was there and thought he was the best keeper I’d ever seen at the time.

at this point the ball is much closer to him than it is his left post. he doesn't move, at all.

once the ball has hits the bottom of the post and goes in it dawns on pope that he should've at least attempted a save so decides the only way to save face is to try recreate the steven taylor v arsenal incident and pretend to have been shot.

fuck strawb.

when i was a kid I like to think I was a bustling centre forward in the malcolm macdonald mould and it was where I played in the school team.

however, i also wasn't adverse to having a go between the sticks and made a good fist of it when I did. something that hadn't escaped the attention of mr walton the teacher who coached the under11s.

one day our usual keeper was poorly so I was asked to step up to the plate, which I did in heroic fashion keeping a clean sheet. can't remember which school it was against now, but im sure they do.

the 10 year old me wouldve saved arsenal's first goal. with ease

I'm sure that school would be amazed to discover that that cat like goalkeeper grew up to be the man that had his collarbone broken by a dog that pulled on his lead.

there's never, ever a bad moment for this.....
