More fundamental an issue than just getting the fullbacks back by the time you watch the rest. We need to get better in possession..... Which is not gonna be easy. I think we might need to make some big moves in January.
Craig 12386
Brilliant as ever from Clery. He makes the important point that the last purchase that really raised the bar was Tonali over 2 years ago. So we are standing still in some respects.
Gemmill 63250
Some vaguely interesting stuff with the NUST chair on the latest Pod on the Tyne re ticketing. The club will publish a quarterly report now which includes figures about success rates in ballots etc. Season ticket waiting list was mentioned too. Worth a listen @thebrokendoll

Aye, possession and misplaced passes is probably the biggest issue as to what's going on at the moment. Oh, yes, and erm of course......not actually being able to land the ball in the back of the net when the odd rare chance is created.
Rayvin 8367
I think the biggest concern in that Clery video is something we've probably all noticed and which is catching other teams out too (Liverpool). The whole league it feels has chased the intensity style of play and now we simply aren't the best at doing it anymore. We're being outfought on what is meant to be our strength. West Ham and Brentford both did a number on us in this respect, it was visible even just watching as an airchair fan. Feels like we need to reinvent ourselves a bit.
aimaad22 6003
We've improved as a squad definitely but the point about the first team being relatively stagnant is a fair one. Elanga was supposed to improve on Murphy I suppose but let's leave that part alone for now and hope for the best. A bit like some of the other issues we've had under Howe, one could argue this is another phase that we need to go through in the evolution to becoming a consistently great team. Granted it does feel like an optimistic take given generally how poor we've been in the league this season but I still back Howe to do it.

With the rat's sale you'd hope there's some room for January spending but given clubs are more reluctant to part with players mid season; it's hard to see us making big moves especially knowing how carefully/cautiously our management handles transfers when it comes to the price.

I suppose if we're completely fair about this, it's the moment when Howe needs to prove he actually is a great manager. He needs to move from being a good one with a good system to a great one who can and will do whatever it takes to reshape and adapt the team. It's encouraging in that sense to see him trying to develop the way we're playing, and that he has recognised the issue - but I guess none of us really know if he's got what it takes to make the adjustment, we just hope he does.
The Fish 12580
I think there's a few things at play here and they're all intertwined. Saying we haven't raised the ceiling since Tonali is a valid criticism, but we also needed to raise the floor and it could be argued that this was a more pressing concern. And to be fair we have tried to do that. Ramsey is an upgrade on Longstaff, Ramsdale an upgrade on Dubravka and Thiaw on Schar. Elanga hasn't done anything impressive yet, and obviously neither has Wissa. Woltemade... is he an upgrade on Isak? I doubt it, he may turn out to be a more important player to the more possession based style we're heading towards, but he's not the predatory striker Isak was. So the foundation of the squad is better than it was a few seasons ago, but we're significantly weaker in other areas, either through personnel or performance. We have to raise the ceiling and raise the floor. And we can't do both at the same time because of PSR. We're trying to morph from one style to an almost diametrically opposed style. And we need a lot of time on the training ground to achieve this, which we didn't get in the window and can't do now with 2 games a week. We're juggling 3 (soon to be 4) competitions. And we don't have the squad to do this. Or at least Howe doesn't have faith in the squad for this. Our summer window was disrupted again. And we lacked leadership in the boardroom to navigate it. Our boardroom remains in a state of confusion and flux. And the ownership are too slow in reacting to sort it out. Mitchell leaving prior to the window meaning we're rudderless going into a pre-Champions League window, the Isak saga starting in June and continuing until deadline day, every signing is overshadowed by the Isak nonsense, we're overpaying for the likes of Elanga, Wissa and Ramsey. So we start the season under a cloud, a cloud which is darkened by good performances reaping scant reward due to having no fit striker at the club. Then as those good performances tire out our good players we starting performing badly and the pressure rises. It's all very frustrating.
Craig 12386
Your last paragraph focuses in on the frustrations for me, like. Raising the floor & ceiling is challenging ebough, without the unwelcome backdrop of C-suite unsettlement and the whole Isak saga. On Isak, Woltemade is not something we can compare with Isak as they're totally different players. Wissa is more closely aligned to that replacement and we all know how challenging that's been.
Craig 12386
I see the club has distributed specific travel advice from the French police for the trip to Marseille. Quite amusing seeing some of the gammons on mainstream social media stating they WILL be wearing their colours and will not be told where they can / can't go and will absolutely wander through Vieux Port wearing their toon top. It's their funeral .... quite literally.

Italian football is skint, Bayern rarely spend silly money on players, Barca are fucked. The only 2 clubs in world football these rules would prevent anyone from competing with in reality are Real Madrid and PSG. What was the last transfer we had that really raised our bar? Most of Howe’s incoming players, tbh. He doesn’t really go for fancy superstars, but each player has added something to the team that was in need of improvement, even if it’s adding “future” players to the squad like Park. None of that was happening under the previous lot. Trippier was a crucial signing, Bruno too. Then you look at young lads like Tino and Hall. All great signings without being a superstar , and all contributing to raising the bar of the whole squad, which is what Howe is about.
