The same bloke argued we'd end comfortably mid-table last season just by bringing in McClaren and Cathro iirc.

Aye, I haven't been to either for a while but thought the same thing and assumed there must be a connection.

Look at Norwich away. Conceding 3 in that game arguably sent us down.

Whatever they say they'll be gutted about Rafa

Despite myself I'm exciting by this.

Agreed, that terrible away record probably flattered us and should've been worse. Bournemouth were very unlucky to lose to us at home and should've won the game.

Yeah, I would go along with that. I've seen that Harry Kane comparison stat before and it's astonishing when it's put in those terms. Shame that injury at Everton meant we only saw the real Shearer for one full season but I suppose that makes his record after that even more remarkable. Think the last two seasons when the club was all about his getting the goalscoring record after we'd been genuine contenders for a few years preceding that is what leaves a bit of a bitter taste in the mouth. -
One of the strikers CT reckons is shit it also one of the ones he cites as being good in previous seasons. So contrary he even disagrees with himself.

We won more home games than 9 other teams (FUCKING NINE) and got relegated. That was down to our absysmal away form (only Villa won fewer away games).

East 17 should stick to running themselves over

Heard that Moyes has supposedly turned Villa down for not being in the top flight.

I agree he'll be promised autonomy over signings if he stays. But you were arguing there was the same freedom over who was signed when McClaren was manager. There's very little evidence to back that up. I have no doubt Rafa would've have spent the money more wisely and effectively last summer but last January isn't proof of anything other than panic.

Well Shelvey is young and English and relatively cheap in the current market. Not suggesting he represents value for money though. We were also rather desperate and his club were more than happy to get rid. Our situation dictated a change from the normal plan, not Ashley allowing others free rein. As for not getting Berahino, I doubt he was ever going to come - Spurs have been interested for a while and WBA didn't seem arsed about cashing in in January. Actively opposed to doing it with a potential relegation rival arguably. And are you actually suggesting the club supposedly going for player A, missing out (again, if you believe we ever really had a chance) then not appearing to have a plan B represents a change in policy? Fuck off man

With a steward https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz1iMZ9E2R8 Funny how he sucker punches him then shits his pants when the little bloke fights back -
Irrespective of which was the weak point that needed addressing most, since it's a cyclical argument now, you're missing HF's point about a signing like Defoe. Mitrovic fits the pattern of signing someone with potential sell-on value, but being unproven in the PL, it was a risk. The same applied to Cisse. And I don't think that paid off either. He had a purple patch when he first arrived then has steadily gone down hill. I don't think you could say he was a top finisher either though. When he's hot he's hot but when he's not, some of the misses he makes are appallingly bad. That's by the by though. Ba was signed because he was on a free and because of his fitness issues we were able to pick him up. You couldn't say he was a Defoe-type signing though because he wasn't someone with a proven PL pedigree over a long period of time either. And Remy was never a permanent signing because he were never willing to match the sort of wages he was able to command. So, as was being pointed out we'd never sign a Defoe-type, proven, experienced in the Premier League with track record of goals over a long period. Therefore we're always going to taking a larger risk on any new striker than clubs willing to pay for those who've proven themselves in this country in the top flight. That's down to the owner and his strategy.
