Or a small vertical axis wind turbine. If everyone had both, we’d pretty much be covered. When the large turbines we have now are due to be replaced, we should be putting these in their place- they’re more efficient, you can place way more of them in the same acreage that we are currently using for onshore farms, and can be operated in higher wind speeds than our present ones.

I said we could if a fraction of the money spent by oil and gas firms on wasteful, pointless or just outright fraudulent stuff, every day, was put in to renewables. The two year time frame to improve the efficiency of renewables isn’t the cloud cuckoo part, it’s the laughable idea that the oil and gas industry will make anything more than the absolute minimum required effort to change.

Aye, and there’s plenty of sea- tidal power, wave power, offshore wind… the tech will only improve with increased usage and funded research. ( That’s also not to mention that we can all probably reduce our consumption by making small changes.) If a tiny fraction of the money that is almost literally pissed away in the UK oil and gas industry each day was spent on renewable development, we’d be producing sustainable power with a saleable surplus within a couple of years.

I’ve said for years- we’re a relatively small island, surrounded by sea, wind, with a half decent amount of sun. If we can’t power ourselves from renewables, it’s because we aren’t trying.

Alex Winter’s* Zappa documentary is on bbc iplayer at the moment. Obviously I’m fairly biased as a fan of his, but it’s pretty good as music documentaries go. It’s not out to convert anyone- the pieces of his that are used tend to be some of his more “out there” stuff, and it doesn’t pretend that he was some blissed out love freak- if anything, he comes across as a very single-minded, not particularly likeable bloke… a bit of a cunt, really But it’s absolutely honest, and does a great job of showing the changes, and constants, in his career over his lifetime. Using “Watermelon in Easter Hay” for the end credits was a lovely touch by the director- it was written by Zappa for his son, Dweezil, and he considered it to be his best and favourite guitar piece. It’s also the last guitar solo that the protagonist of the albums it’s from, Joe’s Garage, gets to play, so was a particularly good choice to wrap up with. ( Zappa requested that no one play it live after he died until Dweezil had, which took him until 2013 to perfect it, and be able to play it without breaking down. The first time he did was in London and it was filmed here.) * yes, that Alex Winter, from Bill and Ted

I’m surprised The Former Loyal Foot Soldier and TMGRSWOFTY 2014 hasn’t provided his loyal puntaz with a quote or two from Supermac or Moncur. The crown is slipping…

I once woke up in a ditch about 15 miles away, and 2hrs before, I was meant to do a 2 day canoe trip training new staff. One of the local French villages, Vagnas ( I shit thee not), held a fortnightly fete where they sold red wine and rocket fuel punch for 50p a glass. It was a legendary piss up attended by all the British paddlers. Fortunately, PGL, who had three centres nearby, were so used to Vagnas casualties that they’d run a “sweeper bus” the morning after, picking up lost staff- I managed to blag a lift and made it in time to shower and pack for the trip. I was wobbly as fuck until lunchtime
