Player of the season given away to a rival team in the same league.

Barton was a huge player for us and we're going to miss his influence and ability. Just as he'd turned the corner and started giving something back after the club stuck by him as well.

Ludicrous. It speaks volumes about the board when a player spends six months in prison yet remains at the club, only to be thrown out for speaking against the hierarchy.

:icon_lol: Aye, they couldnt force him out because he went to prison but his comments on twitter were just the ammunition they needed.

The owner wins as he wants to cut costs. £2.5m saved on JB going.

Disagree. Joey was a first team regular and as such had worth, so the owner has lost an asset for nothing. IMO it was all a game of brinkmanship which the owner has lost.

Ashley doesn't give a shit about the first team though. Leon best and shola ameobi still our best strikers.....no left back. 40 million up for the year.

Barton ceased to be an asset when he said he categorically would not move if a fee was involved.

I was all for tearin his contract up when he was sent to prison. He'd been an unmitigated disaster up to that point. Completely baffling that now that he has finally come good the club have let him leave for free, in the process strengthening another team in the same league. Our player of the season last year, someone who the manager obviously has a lot of faith in as a player, and yet the hierarchy try to win one over on him by telling him he's free to go. They look double the fool now as he moves on increasing his wage and securing his footballing future. In the scheme of things 2.5M is nothing. The club would have you believe that making a free transfer costs that much. Certainly his value to the team was so vastly in excess of that figure, just for this season alone, that this merely confirms again the complete and utter incompetence of Ashley and Llambias.

2.5m is relatively little, but its all about spending the bare minimum or naximising value

Hughton went rather than getting the extra million a year he deserved.

Carroll got a long term contract to maximize sell on value. When he demanded top dollar, he went.

Nolan would have no sell on value at the end of a renewal so he was sold.

Enrique demanded top dollar, had to go.

Barton had no resale value, so they're saving on wages instead.

Football considerations don't come into it and trying to see any logic in it other than financial is a waste of time.

To suggest any of these outcomes were out of the owners hands is too generous as well.

The 2.5M would easily be recovered based on league position alone. He's been instrumental in the 4 points we've got thus far.

Remember we lost 2.5M+ just by putting Alan Smith on the pitch in the last game of the season (and consequently blowing a lead).

Joey and QPR win.

Agreed, an Ashley perspective of football is 99% human trade, 1% sport, fans and entertainment... in an old world perspective he would be reckoned a slaver.

But every decision made is the right one financially speaking, in terms of actually saving money, irrespective of league performance.

I realise you're taking the piss, but by this token they could have a fire sale and get rid of the entire first team. We'd have the lowest wages in the league!

The offer from the club was the same money he was on but excluding his image rights. He was ready to accept it but on the day he was meant to sign, he asked for more. Yes the owner should have done something more constructive but you cant say the player isn't the one who decides. Since then relationships have soured and he has driven that, not the club. I don't for one minute think he wrote what he did on twitter to get his move to QPR so am happy to take what he has said at face value. Only by refusing to re-open contract discussions, was club the telling him to fuck off. Ideas of him being dumped in the reserves are a throwback to times when clubs weren't sued for constructive dismissal. He would have played if he had stayed, no one sits on £56k a week doing nowt if they can help it. His decision though; the club decided to withdraw the contract offer, he decided to leave.

That would be extreme.

Players under the wage cap....get a new contract in order to ensure a good price if anyone comes knocking.

Anyone exeeding or asking to go above the cap....go the journey....for nowt if needs be.

Not taking the piss...nor am I justifying it, but blatantly how it is.

I didn't say the player isn't the one who decides. But the club have done all they can to help joey on his way, giving him a free while he's under contract and performing excellent.

Not taking the piss...nor am I justifying it, but blatantly how it is.

Exactly.

Very disappointed Joey has gone. In fact, no, scratch that. I'm fuckin fuming. Not at the player but at the fucking imbeciles who are trying (and failing big style) to run the club!

Who's next?

Im not too sure what other option the club had about the free, given the situation that arose.

If we leave to one side everything prior to him being told he wouldnt be getting a new contract.

Nobody comes in to sign him when a fee was involved.

Allegedly, (according to his agent), he threw that spat at Leeds where he argued with the players and argued with Pardew and then put out those anti Newcastle tweets on the evening.

Im not too sure at this point what alternative the club had given the broken bridges and Joeys state of mind. There would be no point continuing to pay his wages for the next year if this sort of thing was going to be a regular occurrence and Barton was simply going to be training with the young uns but not playing.

Simply getting rid ASAP in "those" circumstances seems a bit like the only option and the free made it happen.

They weren't anti Newcastle.

So what if he went for nowt, if he went for £20 Million we wouldnt see a penny of it. The bottom line is were weaker as a team, we could go on all day about off field decisions and not on-field decisions, but at the end of the day on the field is where it comes down too and where our season is made and its not lookin its best and wont for a while

C'mon lads let's move on. Joey was leaving the moment they put him on a free transfer list. They wanted rid of him. Pardoo was blowing a PR smokescreen and would have used Joey as much as he could before he left, the writing was on the wall for all to see.

That statement right there proves the club were right to get rid. He was toxic.
