Disagree. Joey was a first team regular and as such had worth, so the owner has lost an asset for nothing. IMO it was all a game of brinkmanship which the owner has lost.

I was all for tearin his contract up when he was sent to prison. He'd been an unmitigated disaster up to that point. Completely baffling that now that he has finally come good the club have let him leave for free, in the process strengthening another team in the same league. Our player of the season last year, someone who the manager obviously has a lot of faith in as a player, and yet the hierarchy try to win one over on him by telling him he's free to go. They look double the fool now as he moves on increasing his wage and securing his footballing future. In the scheme of things 2.5M is nothing. The club would have you believe that making a free transfer costs that much. Certainly his value to the team was so vastly in excess of that figure, just for this season alone, that this merely confirms again the complete and utter incompetence of Ashley and Llambias.

The offer from the club was the same money he was on but excluding his image rights. He was ready to accept it but on the day he was meant to sign, he asked for more. Yes the owner should have done something more constructive but you cant say the player isn't the one who decides. Since then relationships have soured and he has driven that, not the club. I don't for one minute think he wrote what he did on twitter to get his move to QPR so am happy to take what he has said at face value. Only by refusing to re-open contract discussions, was club the telling him to fuck off. Ideas of him being dumped in the reserves are a throwback to times when clubs weren't sued for constructive dismissal. He would have played if he had stayed, no one sits on £56k a week doing nowt if they can help it. His decision though; the club decided to withdraw the contract offer, he decided to leave.

Im not too sure what other option the club had about the free, given the situation that arose.

 

If we leave to one side everything prior to him being told he wouldnt be getting a new contract.

 

Nobody comes in to sign him when a fee was involved.

 

Allegedly, (according to his agent), he threw that spat at Leeds where he argued with the players and argued with Pardew and then put out those anti Newcastle tweets on the evening.

 

Im not too sure at this point what alternative the club had given the broken bridges and Joeys state of mind. There would be no point continuing to pay his wages for the next year if this sort of thing was going to be a regular occurrence and Barton was simply going to be training with the young uns but not playing.

 

Simply getting rid ASAP in "those" circumstances seems a bit like the only option and the free made it happen.
