JJ 0
As bad as Labour are handling this, the Tories have politicised the emergence of the SNP to kill them (Labour) and have done so with aplomb, sadly... It's actually making the Tories look competent, how well they've played all the other parties. We need better leadership on the left than this. We need consistent strategies that will differentiate our parties from the Tories, not this rush to the middle ground. Truth is though, it's not going to happen. We're lumbered with the Tories until a) they fuck up something really, really seriously or b ) some geopolitical issue (like the financial crisis) comes along and shafts them. Even then, on the latter one, Labour would have to be properly sorted out to be able to make the most of it. If the opportunity came along now, they wouldn't be able to capitalise... I agree with pretty much everything, but I wouldn't say they've done it with aplomb. They've set a few obvious traps and Labour have just walked straight into them. But again, Labour's strategy is to win a few hundred thousand Tory votes instead of going after the millions who don't vote, or those who've left over the years to vote SNP, Lib Dem, Green etc, so it was inevitable that they were going to fall for these Tory tactics. Christmas Tree 4702
Labour have become such a lame opposition that you have to wonder how the hell they can turn it around by 2020. The constant abstentions on bills that could have been defeated but instead passed is just enabling this Tory government to push through it's vile policies. Labour need to win people back as there's a mass of people who either don't vote or vote for another party, but instead focus their entire strategy on winning a few hundred thousand votes off the Tories in marginals, and thus this is the feeble opposition you get. They opposed everything during the last 5 years and got trounced.

I can see no way back for Labour while the SNP have a strangle hold in Scotland. The next election is a foregone conclusion which will allow a decent leader to emerge for Labour in 2020, but with Scotland sewn up and UKIP growing South of the border, nothing's changing. Rayvin 5186
Thing is, much as I want to believe otherwise, I actually find myself in agreement with CT here. Labour look shot - they've never properly got it together following Blair and they have no idea who they are anymore. The left, while still the larger proportion of the country IMO, are fragmented, and the Tories are sweeping up the middle ground that Labour failed to vacate. Genuinely believe we're fucked until something else comes along that kicks off governmental change outside of domestic politics. Maybe withdrawal from the EU would do it, but I expect the Tories will play both sides of that debate... Edited July 21, 2015 by Rayvin

Yeah I guess that's probably true. This is what happens when you lose an election and the leader immediately vacates the scene. Miliband should have stayed on to continue guiding the party and steering the debate as Brown should have done before him. I don't know if that would have been enough this time, but a significant part of me thinks that if Brown had continued to lead and stood in opposition while the fallout from the financial crisis was raging, we wouldn't be where we are today. The Tories peddled a pack of lies entirely unanswered by Labour, and they're doing so again now.

It's been said 1000 times but the biggest mistake Labour made was chosing Ed over David and that was down to the unions' stupidity. Look where it's got them now. PaddockLad 17111
It's all mostly cyclical. There was a Tory on the radio yesterday droning on about how after the coalition's cost cutting in the last parliament crime has fallen and hospital waiting times had been improved and kids were being educated better blah blah blah...which all may or may not be true depending on what stats you want to believe.Thing is if Davey Milli arrives and saves Labour from themselves and there's another financial "adjustment" in the next few years it won't mean a fuckin thing. If the press turn on the Tories they'll be toast, same as Majors crowd were in the nineties once an acceptable leader emerged.

Christmas Tree 4702
The Bastards! David Cameron has demanded that porn websites introduce strict age checks or face being shut down. The Prime Minister said that, if under-18s are not locked out from viewing explicit images, he will take action. One option is to set up an independent regulator which could force internet service providers (ISPs) to block offending sites under the threat of fines. While many websites currently ask for users to enter their date of birth before entering, minors can enter a different age which will allow them access. Mr Cameron proposed that websites ask for bank details or credit card details instead. "Our one nation government is working hard to make the internet a safer place for children," he said. "The next step in this campaign is to curb access to harmful pornographic content which is currently far too widely available. "I want to see age restrictions put into place or these websites will face being shut down."
