FOOTBALLER Nile Ranger sits bleary-eyed behind the wheel of his Range Rover after apparently inhaling laughing gas.

The 22-year-old uploaded the brazen snap on his Instagram profile two weeks before he crashed the same vehicle into a parked car in a mysterious 6am smash.

In the picture, the former England and Newcastle striker is sucking from a balloon and holding a “cracker”, used to open small metal cylinders of mind-bending nitrous oxide.

Laughing gas, also known as hippy crack, is not illegal to possess but users can suffer hallucinations, loss of limb control and unstoppable laughter.

Car experts said the position of the rev counter on the dashboard meant the car’s engine was running at the time the photo was taken.

Ranger’s actions were last night labelled “irresponsible” and “dangerous” by anti-drug campaigners.

The footballer posted the photo on April 21. On May 5, he shunted a Vauxhall Zafira belonging to young mum Nejla Khan and smashed into a truck in Cheshunt, Herts.

He posted a picture of his wrecked car on Twitter and wrote: “Had a mad crash yesterday – I HATE FOXES.” He remained on the scene to give his details to police.

Herts police said the driver provided a negative breath test and no arrests were made.

But breathalysers only test for alcohol and are not able to detect other substances.

The picture has prompted questions over whether the 6am smash should be investigated further.

Miss Khan, 36, told us: “This is extremely shocking. This guy smashed into my car and writes it off and here he is apparently inhaling laughing gas at the wheel.

“It is really irresponsible. I can’t believe it. I don’t think he should be on the road. I hope the police see this and maybe investigate the crash a bit more.”

Ranger has yet to apologise for the incident and Miss Khan, whose one-year-old daughter Munnever has been very ill, has been left without a car.

The controversial footballer, who was released by the Magpies in March after a spell of bad behaviour, wrote under the picture: “BALLOONS IN BRUM MUAAAAD.”

“Doing balloons” is slang for inhaling laughing gas.

One follower wrote: “Mad man”. Another said: “Ballooning ell!” And a third wrote: “Old skool highness.”

Drug charities warned that use of the laughing gas can lead to long-term health damage and even death.

Although the effects last only a few minutes, users say the sensation is like a hit of heroin or crack cocaine.

Stephen Ream, director of substance abuse charity Re-Solv, said: “It is extremely disappointing to see a footballer posting images such as this that young people might see and emulate.

“It is an exceptionally dangerous thing to do whilst driving.

“Inhaling it decreases the oxygen supply to the brain, resulting in a short but very intense period of light-headedness and can often result in the user passing out. ”

A spokesman for substance abuse prevention charity Mentor said: “Nile Ranger has a great opportunity to be a good role model for young people but he blows it here.”

Ranger has recently been doing community service after attacking his girlfriend in March.

In 2007, he was sentenced to 11 weeks in a young offenders’ institute for robbery and in 2011 he was arrested and charged with being drunk and disorderly.

He is currently on bail after being arrested on suspicion of raping a young woman at a hotel in Newcastle in January.

I'm assuming this rape accusation refers to his absolute rape of Newcastle's finances by signing a five year deal when it was plain to see how absolutely rubbish he was?

Put him away for life.

I would usually chip in and state that no professional footballer would ever need to rape a little dirtbag in a hotel but obviously Ranger falls some way short of that criteria
