Think it was Billy Furious who noted (and I'm paraphrasing) that the difference between Newcastle and Sunderland fans was that the former nearly all seemed to have a pride in the city even if they weren't from there, i.e. from Crammy, Ashington and the like and enjoyed going to the games and all the stuff that comes with that like drinking in the city centre etc. whereas mackems from Murton, Consett and so on have little or no effinity with the place and just support the team. It's a subtle difference but it's part of the reason they take the piss out of the Geordie Nation stuff etc. They just don't get it. I appreciate 'Geordie Nation' is a cringeworthy phrase and not one I would use but you'll take my point.

He's been an idiot and I don't condone racial slurs but it is funny how a grown man calls someone a name and then tells teacher when they get called by another name. Shelvey shouldn't have done it, of course, but ffs. People love this sort of shit though as it allows them to take the moral highground. I also find it a bit unfair when, as frequently seems to be the case, what was actually alleged to have been said isn't revealed. Like the Beeb's story currently running on their site which states it was racial abuse. It's not fair because you can't judge the severity of it.

Basically, yeah. If it was so much in the country's interests to stay in the EU (as he argued) then it wasn't something that should be decided by a plebiscite. Especially on a complex issue that most laymen couldn't really get their heads around and even more so on an emotive subject. The timing of it was fucking awful too. Yeah, I think we largely agree and it was a combination of those things obviously. My point, which I probably didn't make very well was that you probably wanted at least another 150 in the first innings of the 4th test and a similar sort of score (i.e. 550-ish*) in the last one. That puts more pressure on India because it's almost impossible for them to win (although I have little doubt they'd have managed draws) and it removes the pressure of having to bat when all you can possibly do is a save the match at best in the 2nd innings. *edit: And that side / batting line up should've been more than capable of making that sort of score.
