I think they’ll support him and stand by him with certain conditions. He’s going to need to come clean (to the manager etc at least) about exactly what he’s been up to though. He’s a valuable asset at the end of the day so they’re not going to just bin him. I could imagine it all taking a long time too. Looks like Milan have pulled a fast one though.

According to what I have read in some Italian media, if Milan knew about the story and has not communicated anything to Newcastle, Milan would also be sanctioned (I don't know what type of sanction) because it would be considered fraud.

Aye, from what I’ve read it could be an 18 month or so ban but may not go through until December time. Hopefully we can either sue Milan, or appeal to the FA/UEFA to have Tonalis FFP impact withheld until his ban is finished then we can go and buy a CM in the January window. 
 

It sounds like Milan knew btw, apparently Tonali was considered a no go until right before we moved for him when Milan were suddenly happy to sell. The major headache this causes for us (aside from losing the player for a while) is it tied up FFP.

Apparently, Tonali has admitted that he has a gambling problem and has said that he is going to do everything he can to get his penalty reduced and that he is already trying to find a plan to deal with his problems.

 

Apparently, the other investigated player (Fagioli) has accused Tonali of having helped him with betting (that is, he was the one who introduced him to the subject) by teaching him how different applications worked. And Tonali is going to admit all. 

 

There is a part that I don't understand very well, but there is talk that they could commit a sporting crime and, apparently, if one of the things on which he has bet has come true (for example, that a player sees a yellow card) It would be considered a sporting crime and the minor penalty that could be imposed would be 4 years of disqualification. (I understand that this has to have many nuances).

But they already assume that he will not return to the national team for a long time and that he will not be able to play in the European Championship if Italy qualifies.

This will work in our favour in terms of the punishment Tonali gets in Italy IMO.

What's the likelihood that the FA would uphold a ban by the Italian FA around a law that only applies for one of the countries? (Assuming that Tonali has merely been betting on cards on some online casino or whatever.)

 

It would seem to me that it goes against the relationship between a nation's law and justice to punish a person for something in the UK because they've broken a law in another country when that law not only doesn't exist in the UK but the act is perfectly permissible in the UK. Does that make sense? I'm an idiot and not a lawyer so I'm undoubtedly looking at this with my moron glasses on, but I would imagine there must be some stipulation in the bilateral agreement between national FAs that punishments are only meted out across borders on matters of law that are agreed upon across borders.

 

Imagine an extreme situation, for instance, where a player is banned in [made up country] for [perfectly moral and legal act in the UK which we can all imagine]. It would be completely ridiculous to then uphold the ban in the UK for [perfectly moral and legal act in the UK] just because it's illegal in [made up country]. Is this not analogous -- at least in a small way -- to such a scenario (at least in terms of the law and how it's supposed to work)?

 

To put it simply: a person can't be punished unless they've broken the law. And according to the FA, Tonali has not broken a law. He played cards on the internet. (Or maybe not. Maybe he whacked a guy and chucked him in the river. Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!)
