I seen 14 magpies in a field the other week.

Needless to say I was confused so I started looking for cracks in the pavement instead.

For clarity.

One for sorrow, two for mirth,

Three for a wedding, four for a birth,

Five for silver, six for gold,

Seven for a secret not to be told.

Eight for heaven, nine for hell,

And ten for the devil's own sel'.

If you see 14 magpies you bring it down to a single number...eg...1+4 =5 which is for silver

If you see a single magpie you always wish it the time of day to ward off evil

So basically I have to track the little c**ts down again for my silver? How do I know they were the same magpies? Should I have gotten off the bus?

Fucking Magpies :D

From Wiki

There is considerable variation in the lyrics used. The following is perhaps the most common modern version:

One for sorrow

Two for joy

Three for a girl

Four for a boy

Five for silver

Six for gold

Seven for a secret, never to be told

Eight for a wish

Nine for a kiss

Ten for a bird you must not miss

Origins

The rhyme has its origins in superstitions connected with magpies, considered a bird of ill omen in some cultures, and in England, at least as far back as the early sixteenth century.[1] The rhyme was first recorded around 1780 in a note in John Brand's Observations on Popular Antiquitites on Lincolnshire with the lyric:

One for sorrow,

Two for mirth,

Three for a wedding,

And four for death.[1]

One of the earliest versions to extend this was published, with variations, in M. A. Denham's Proverbs and Popular Saying of the Seasons (London, 1846):

One for sorrow,

Two for luck; (or mirth)

Three for a wedding,

Four for death; (or birth)

Five for silver,

Six for gold;

Seven for a secret,

Not to be told;

Eight for heaven,

Nine for [hell]

And ten for the d[evi]l's own sell![1

Can we move on.

seems fairly flexible system, what with birth and death being interchangeable. Can I propose a modern version given that these birds are such tarts to what's new?

1 for a pizza

2 for a can of K

3 for some dogging round the back of Homebase

4 for a tenner

5 for Have You Been in an Accident That Wasn't Your Fault?

6 for too much ketamine

7 for a crack at that Imogen bint

8 for a brrraaaaaaaaap

9 for a fuck this is getting boring

One of the reasons I took this week off was to sort out my gardens but one day of labour on Tuesday convinced me the job was too big - just arranged for a bloke to completely sort it next week for a reasonable amount - result.
