Hello In early December, my wife and I will be visiting the UK. For my wife, it'll be her first visit and for me my first since the late 80s. As part of it, I'll be visiting Newcastle for the first time since I spent the first five years of my life there (during the 70s) and--the whole point we're visiting the UK--I'll be attending my first ever Newcastle game. A life-long dream will have been fulfilled! Anyhow, our simple itinerary is to visit Newcastle for the NUFC v Wigan game and then meander our way down to the capital for Fulham v NUFC the following Sunday. In between, we want to make a couple of stops for stayovers and in particular we want to visit the Lake District. Now, my wife and I aren't really party animals, but we love good scenery and a great meal (within cost). Can any of you suggest the best village, town or otherwise to stay at in the Lake District. I'd greatly appreciate your advice. Also, if you have any other suggestions for blow-your-socks-off places to visit, please add those too! Thanks

Grenade' Explodes During Sepahan vs. Al-Ahi Soccer Match In Iran

It mustn't have made that loud a bang as the player in the foreground hardly reacted. Some must have simply thought it a flare. Big flames, though! -
Who do you as a Toon see as rivals and friends?
dbsweeney replied to 3bdelilah's topic in Newcastle Forum
As a Aussie, I love watching the derbies because they're usually action-packed games but I can't claim any personal hatred for Mackems. In fact, at the first of the two derbies last season I met a nice Mackem couple living here in Perth. I fucking HATE Liverpool. Can't fucking stand them. Would love them to collapse in a pile of stinking horse manure. In any sports code, easily the team I dispise the most. Also, would love to take revenge on Villa. -
Watch the first minute and 45 seconds of this to get a sense of the courage of the people who were involved in these trips. Truely awe inspiring what these people achieved. Very sad that the first human being who set foot on another surface other than which he was born has died. RIP, Neil. P.S. The documentary this clip is from, For All Mankind, is inspiring and, I think, the finest that has been made on the subject of the moon landings. To see it on pristine bluray is a treat.

By having a quick look around on Google news, it seems he's linked to Chelsea and Man City. But that's been the case for months now. Having said that, if a big offer was to come in for anyone which would turn the heads of the regime, it'd be for Tiote. Everything seems too quiet and going too well for us at the moment. Ashley will do something to piss us all off. He's done so over the last five or so years, so I can't see it changing now. Hope I'm wrong.

Newcastle United season 2012-2013
dbsweeney replied to south_cheshire_toon's topic in Newcastle Forum
Ha? I wish ... but it ain't gonna happen. I really hope we go on a great cup run. The League Cup would be more doable than the FA, but I'd prefer the FA. My head thinks we'll be seventh (actually, probably eighth) this year. A somewhat realistic hope is that we end up ahead of Liverpool again and that they have another shocking (or even worse) season. Would love that. I also hope that we also have the same amount of exciting games that we've produced the last couple of seasons. -
My god ... the new season can't start soon enough for me.

Try For All Mankind ... terrific film (and ace soundtrack by Brian Eno!)

I was waiting for someone to mention inertia.

You gotta think that'll be McCartney's last big outing ... he was terrible. And I'm an ENOURMOUS Beatles fan. Hard to think though who else could be used (apart from the Stones or a patch-worked Queen) with the same broad familiarity to several generations and is 'inoffensive'.

As an Aussie with a decent working knowledge of the UK (as many Aussies do, plus I lived in Newcastle up until I was 5 years of age ... actually, that's a long time ago), I understood any and all 'quirks' (not that there were any, really) and thought it was a terrific ceremony. Far, far more personal than the macro-view of the Beijing Olympics. Also, the flame is fantastic ... as was the acknowledgement of the NHS. Also, might I add, your fair isle has created a shit load of absolutely cracking music and films (loved the shots of A Matter of Life and Death and Kes).

I'd like Norwich to do okay simply because of Chris Hughton.

If his wife supposedly burst into tears when he signed for us, how's she gonna react when he announces they're all leaving for Dubai?

Film/moving picture show you most recently watched
dbsweeney replied to Jimbo's topic in General Chat
I'm gonna go see it, but I fear I'll feel the same way. He needs to work on something of his own again, not scripted by someone else or based on a novel. -
So fucking true, and the deregulation and control over government it causes, too.

Jesus, the pomposity of all aspects that club knows no bounds.

You'd like to think they'd care more about their own team ... but in a thread titled 'It's in their own hands now': and the poster's sig is:

Beckford, when we were back in the Championship

I feel gutted, absolutely gutted, over this news. RIP, Adam, you've given us so much enjoyable music over the years. I can't begin to tell you how much the likes of Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head and Ill Communication to me. Thank you for that. Best wishes to his family and Mike and Adam Horowitz. Such sad news

Fuck me, that was good.

If the FFP rules do have an effect, what we'd want in an owner rather than Ashley is someone willing to keep the same recruitment policy, infrastructure building, and wage structure, but isn't so willing to sell players if any old offer comes in (unless it's ridiculous money). I still get the feeling that MA would be keen to sell a good portion of our top players if money comes in, regardless of whether he thinks we can't replace them with equal quality or that it'll have a negative effect on our league standing. I'd still be keen to have Anil Ambani come in. He's extremely rich, yet isn't likely to be silly with his cash. He'd keep our current top players, and could keep our same recruitment policy going. Plus, he's a Toon fan!

The point the article's making is that having CL will help us keep players we'd otherwise be likely to sell if a large offer came ... players that have been the backbone of our great season regardless of their age ... and would be VERY difficult to replace given the amount we now spend on recruitment.
