Pele was all over the dirty scrubbers once he got that lifetime supply of Viagra.

I reckon he was when he used to frequent Studio 54 in his NY Cosmos days too

On shitty pitches. Just reminded me but I recently saw highlights of a game I vaguely remember seeing as a kid. Liverpool v Flamengo in the Intercontinental Cup as was. Played in Tokyo and sponsored by Toyota. Anyway, the pitch was bobbly as fuck. Liverpool had some great players including Dalglish, who’s easily one of the best ever British players. Zico (who I’d never even heard of back then) - his technique on that pitch. When you talk about some of the best players ever. He could do everything

Along similar lines Lineker talks about how the pitch at the Azteca in 1986 was one of the worst he'd ever played on. Claimed it had recently been relaid and the squares of turf moved under foot. And then he mentions the second of Maradona's goals against England.

Maybe it's a case of halcyon days not being as good as they seem but at the time the Azteca seemed like the perfect footballing arena to me.

Probably was given we were still playing on muddy fields in winter

As a total aside apropos of nothing - When Shields won the FA Amateur Cup in 1969 (I was there!!) at old Wembley, my dad was speaking to some of the players afterwards (our neighbour was Shields' Captain's sister) and he'd asked what they felt playing at Wembley, to a man they said it was awful and like playing on a cabbage patch and totally exhausting.

I was living in Swindon in 1969 , and went to a few of their games. Including the League cup final against Arsenal at Wembley.

The pitch was absolutely awful , more sand and mud than grass , they held the horse of the year show there shortly before.

There are sure to be some videos on you-tube of the game ,

I'm often bowled over by the quality of pitches I get to play on over here. Now that I think about it, it may be due to the cricket pitches on them.

That is fucking magnificent.

I had been swayed by these johny-come-latelys, but for me it's Pele first,  Maradona second and George Best third

I was stuck by the number of defenders who he just jinked onto their arses 😂

That particular goal (and overall performance) in the final against Sweden in ‘58. The goal in itself is a bit underrated I think. But he was 17 years old. 17! Ffs! Absolutely mental. I think it’s against France maybe, earlier in the tournament, where he scored a very similar one.
